Why is it so fucking tedious to grind levels early game in disgaea 3?
Like I know I'm not even collecting statisticians yet cause no pirate club, but the level 11 item worlds are still fucking dangerous after like 30 runs through the first 10 floors killing every enemy I saw with a single unit.

Mao sucks in his main game, but it's because 3 just felt like retread of 1 with most of the story being going into Mao's heart over and over again and he even spends a good chunk of it talking like a baby.
Mao's main problem is he doesn't really bounce off his supporting characters like Beryl or Almaz. Laharl has very good back and forth with Etna and Flonne and each other which is why they're still considered by far the best. Even Adell with Rozalin was good. Beryl and Almaz just kind of react to whatever Mao does, they never push back and just follow him around and Mao suffers for it.
I think his cameos show that Mao conceptually is one of the best characters, its just they don't take advantage of it in the main game.

Because of the XP curve it's generally better to have an actual team during the main story, but post-game it's more efficient to have just a few over-leveled characters. I don't think most people are actually consciously aware of this fact, but it seems like most people do run through the main story with an actual team then switch to a few main units in the post-game anyways.

From 1-99 (main story levels) the XP to get to the next level grows exponentially while from 100-9999 it grows linearly, and in fact there's a drop off in the XP required for the next level after 99 and it's not until around level 300 does it start to require more XP between levels than it did at 99. (This is the iconic level 99 "glitch" in Disgaea games.)
So during the main story where there's no hyper-efficient grindan spots and the XP required grows exponentially, you get rapid diminishing returns for the amount of time you put in grinding a single unit. This means it's more efficient to spend time leveling your underleveled units to increase the total strength of your team while going through the main story.
After that, you'll have gone past the level 99 mark on your main units and unlocked the best grinding spots so it becomes more efficient to take advantage of the less punishing linear growth and just level a few units instead.
This is assuming the average player isn't passing "stronger enemies" bills and/or stacking monsters when grinding for the main story.

As somebody that has maxed an Archer in seven Disgaeas for the glory of their drills:
1, worse gunner, no reason to use bows ever, it's one of the worse ultimate weapons even.
2, lovers gave them to do a few exclusive ranges for normal attacks, but subpar overall till they're broken like your overworked prinny is broken.
3, they work really well in this game, extra damage by distance made them above average for the first time.
4, they had a really good moveset and magichanges, specially with Deaths adding MP damage.
5, broken as fuck, the amount of support damage they can do is ridiculous.
6 & 7, I think it got nerfed after 5 because they were extra silly in that one and I don't remember getting fifteen extra attacks ever. May be because things died tho.

It's a generic fist skill. Item Reincarnation lets you stick skills from a different weapon class on upgraded weapons, so even though I have Laharl as a sword user, he can use a couple Fist skills for utility. Not quite as versatile as sub weapons from 5, but at least you don't have to worry about leveling multiple weapons or raising multiple weapon masteries for access to one or two skills.

Disgaea 6 starts with the big numbers at level 1. So if you just really want big numbers just play it. But that is one of the reasons people don't like it, the appeal is going from single digit numbers to billions and higher.
All the games are pretty repetitive but Disgaea 4 introduces the cheat shop (it's not actually cheating) so you can easily boost your exp gains. Disgaea 5 has innocent breeding if you want to skip the grind for specialists/innocents. Disgaea 1 has a the least amount of mechanics you need to grind if you just want simplicity and has the least amount of post-game content.

"Innocents" are stat-boosters you can slot into weapons, kinda like Decorations in Monster Hunter. But they're presented as monsters living in the item, and you can subdue them and combine them with others to level them up. I think it's better to add one or two weapons that matter than the MK way.
Weapon movesets are getting too alike in Disgaea due some shapes being far better than others already.

Playing through Witch and Hundred K***ht, and it's fairly fun. Clearly with some flaws (weapon switching, for example), but still interesting and engaging.
I only wish I could upscale it or something. Upping resolution scale in RPCS3 makes built-in blur absolutely horrendous.
And also model viewer, I want to see 3D models at closer range than game allows.

If we go back to Disgaea 6's method of divvying up XP to everyone at the end of battle, then the weapons won't need it. But as long as they keep putting overly specific and exclusionary Ordeals leveling in the game, then anyone without access to a 3x3 is gonna fall way behind. D7 had Jumbify to circumvent the issue entirely though, so we'll see.

I don't mind weapons having more specific uses, though. I miss when fists moved enemies and spears moved the user.
