Dunno about GOTY, but it's really good. Game mechanics had me wondering if I was breaking the game or playing it the way it was meant to be played with how hard I grinded my archetypes.
It's also extremely heavy handed with the "Metaphor" but that is part of the charm.
However, it doesn't let me fuck the shit out of Gallica or shove her on a jar and make her watch me have sex with other women, so 0/10

What are some good games with fairy companions? The ones I’ve played that I can remember are Metaphor, Bravely Default, Ocarina of Time, and Majora’s Mask, but I’m sure there are more that I’m not thinking of.

At first I thought it was fantasy persona, but now I see it as very much its own game and hopefully series....
My friend described it as persona meets Shin megami tensi, but I haven't played through a shin megami tensi game yet so I don't know how accurate that is.

Calander system and bonds add alot. I thought it was interesting that this game doesn't try and trick you into reading the nuance of the social situation, you should just seek to be as kind as possible for max stats.
A little too easy? Maybe, but I like it cause it re enforces the message of the game.
Even though the gameplay is excellent, the story is incredible and it really breathes new life into the Persona calander social link system, 0/10 for not being able to have sex with Gallica or put her in a jar and force her to watch me have sex with other women

Loved Persona 4, liked Persona 5, didn't get very far through Metaphor. Dropped this game after about 10 hours due to lack of interest. Did I miss anything of note or can I steer clear of a second try?

Did you finish the first major dungeon? The game genuinely gets better once you get a car and start traveling and doing fantastic fantasy election campaign and stuff. The first dungeon is kinda lame since it's still story setup and you don't even get many mechanics yet.
So if you dropped it before the first dungeon, maybe give it another try if you have time.
But I guess if you really don't care about combat, that part doesn't change much, and I feel like most of what you do in the game is combat and dungeons. Social links feel more like a distraction in comparison.
