Why did Deadlock flop so badly?

dota fans don't actually want to aim or learn movement tech, that's why they're dota fans
overwatch fans don't want to learn item and level build orders, that's why they're overwatch fans
tf2 fans don't want to deal with their abilities being on cooldown, that's why they're tf2 fans
I can't think of any other groups that would be interested in this game, it's like skullgirls where it literally only appeals to the developer of the game and nobody else

fps fans don't want to shoot creeps and don't enjoy losing because they have less raw stats
moba fans don't want to be constantly sliding and jumping around while aiming at heads, they want to right click and qwer people to death
its like making an rts fighting game or something

most developers do not have the psychology required to actually know what people like and dont like about games
most gamers also dont
everyone inevitably focuses on the wrong elements because it was suggested to them as an element of dissatisfaction by someones wild speculation and all they can do is latch onto it to feel heard. They then double down on these and dogmatically adhere to them to the point they keep making the same mistakes worse and worse as time goes on.

I knew almost 20 people who played the game and they all left because the matchmaking is so abysmal. I think most people had the same idea, if you look at steamdb you can see 100k people leave the game around the same time (December 2024). No they still haven't changed it and in fact its worse now since there is a LOT less players. But its ok that its dying before beta because its just a playtest! and games NEVER get cancelled due to lack of interest before release right guys its totally fine everything is fine!

This
I am one of the few people that could have maybe enjoyed it
But then items just ruined it
>have to build items
>k i can do that
>but your items change on your build/character/enemy chars/enemy builds
>also you have to sell some items and buy others at certain times
>also if you get even slightly behind on items you lose no matter what
Its just too much autism

In that case nobody should ever make another multiplayer game because all of them are dead games now
>>717634737 (OP)
It's genuinely too hard mechanically for casuals to enjoy it. As someone who dropped it, at this point it's got a high skill floor so it's hard to get into, and it's got a cavernous skill ceiling so you will get obliterated with no hope of success against someone who knows what they're doing and has the time to no life the game.

Because why would anyone trust a multiplayer game by the people who abandoned their last two multiplayer games?
Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

The items were alright to me, what killed my fun was terrain autism. Half the cast could just freely fuck around the entire map while the other half was stuck adhering to the roads with their dicks in their hands and they did not make up for that.

I went 0-20 on my first three matches before I quit
My friend couldn't believe it since he played before me and did fine but hadn't played for weeks
He played a few matches and got crushed each time
>hm, we have geat success with half-life and team shooters thanks to the extreme modding community and community servers, what should we develop next?
>"how about only dogshit, corporate-controlled multiplayer matchmaking based games and lose BILLIONS while doing this?"

I think it was a lot of things, matchmaking, people leaving, and people getting better at the game. It probably wouldn't have been such a big deal if games weren't 30+ minutes. Getting stomped for 10 minutes sucks. Getting stomped for 30 minutes is miserable

Hero shooters are on the way out. Rivals extended the genre's life a little, but I don't think beyond that exception they have any longevity. Tired of GAAS. Tired of matchmaking. We need to go back to server browsing glory days.

I hope a major update in the future bumps player numbers back up. The game has replaced Dota for me as my nightly one or two matches to wind down. Icefrog and whoever else at Valve (and that fucker Hopoo) really have made something special. I'd never expect it to hit Dota numbers, but more than a few thousand players would be nice.

I still remember loving this game for the year I played it in 2011~. Amazing game. The sequel was ass and the alpha/beta players really helped to kill it faster.
