I don't think the designs themselves as individual creatures are exclusionary but as a hivemind faction imminent threat they don't belong.

in what fucking world is The Forgotten Realms "Tolkienesque" and why would you even think that
Anonymous No.717640272 [Report]
Considering that Tolkien himself had nameless horrors gnawing at the roots of the world... why the fuck shouldn't they?

I know I'm asking the impossible - but stop being such a tremendous faggot for once, OP.

>tolkienesque fantasy world
nigga they had fucking ufos with laser guns in the original dnd modules.
it has a lot of tolkienesque shit (so much that they got their asses sued by the tolkien estate and had to change some names), but it was always very much a "kitchen sink, just have fun with it" sort of fantasy setting.
Murlynd from Greyhawk is literally a cowboy.

You now know that the name "Githyanki" was a name made by George RR Martin way back in the 70s in one of his stories, that they just outright yoined for a name for D&D's Fiend Folio (the actual species itself is different, they just took the name).
George RR Martin didn't find out about it until like the 2000's

I've come to the conclusion I don't know of a single fantasy series that is actually 100% a generic fantasy setting
some get close but they always get something unique in the way of that

D&D related, I picked up that NWN2 enhanced edition and played it for about 8 or so hours.
This is the laziest remaster I've ever seen, and that's mostly because I never messed with the switch port of KotOR2 (made by the same devs as this) which I hear is also bad.

I'm trying to decide if I want to play BG3 again, Pathfinder:Kingmaker again, Pathfinder: WotR again, or Icewind Dale 2 (which I started a long time ago but never actually beat)

they're owned by embracer so i'm assuming they just have access to old ips
it's weird tho bc they own Beamdog themselves who did the BG1 and 2 versions that can run on modern computers and those are perfectly fine.

You're a goddamn retard if you don't think every work of fantasy after The Hobbit and LOTR wasn't inspired by Tolkien. The Hobbit being a book from the 1930's read by entire generations before the LOTR which released in the 1950's.

American fantasy developed independently until the 1960s-1970s, because Tolkien's works were in publisher limbo over here.
From REH and Lovecraft's circle, to guys like Vance and Leiber and past them, the US fantasy market developed in their own direction. With a greater focus on action and an acceptance of a motley mix of 'things' in a world. Where sci-fi lost tech was allowed to exist beside guys in chain mail swinging maces at one another, alongside shit like dinosaurs or cryptids. This was all together fantasy, and being internally consistent was not important.
Gygax was more of a fan of the American sword and sorcery fantasy than he was a fan of Tolkien's work. But his buddies were fans of Tolkien, so he threw references to him into his more American table top game.

It would just be incomprehensible rage bait.
Which is why the setting is highly suited to point and click adventures, and why there's several of them.

Wrong. GRRM got it from another source too, and the Fiend Follio had people submit fan creatures. Someone else used the name on their fan work, and that got submitted.

Cthulhu is the big tentacley one, and he was mentioned as having such. Any additions to the mythos that were
>not described
or
>not made by him
usually had tentacles because most people who latch on to better works than they can create are, well, not creative.

It also has space travel, dimension hopping, and all sorts of wild shit. Even in the gay state that dnd is in right now it’s always primarily a platform for dms to invent stories out of their asses

Dragon Quest? There's no surprise twist villain, nothing "morally grey", just simple good vs evil story of some sword and sorcery heroes killing a dragon lord and saving the world.

FR isn't tolkienesque. It has underground cities of femdom darkies. It has a dragon god that lives in a space station. The surface of the moon is a hologram put there to hide the existence of the advanced society that lives there.
Anonymous No.717652082 [Report]
D&D's real roots were in American Pulp Fantasy, not Tolkein. The Forgotten Realms setting is the one with the most Tolkein-esque flavor, but it isn't the only campaign setting and it wasn't even the first. It's just the grognards really latched on to it thanks to a shitload of (officially-licensed) fanfiction young-adult novels released that used that setting.
