My main rig has windows 7 on it.
It plays emulators exclusively.
It's completely offline.
It's hooked up to a CRT.

Don't fall for the "upgrade" meme.

i upgraded, and i regret it. Winblows 11 has display driver issues, loads of unity games and random indie games have screen flickering alt-tab issues now that are unsolvable until some sort of patch comes through. I've updated the display drivers twice now, done heaps of troubleshooting, and im still unable to narrow down the issue.

>but I don't play new games
Then you may as well have stated on 7 instead of 10 which is already a botnet.

the windows 11 cpu reqs are stupidly high
something like an i5 7500 (which is not supported) is still a totally capable cpu
its literally just a ploy they made with hardware manufacturers to make more people upgrade (microsoft gets licensing revenue from each pc sold and the manufacturers obviously also profit)

u wut m8? You only need a cpu that support popcnt, I used an i5-4670k for 3 years on the first 3 windows 11 builds.
Those are mostly OEM builder requirements, they can't sell 11 with an old cpu.

They just barely killed the core2duo with 24H2 requiring popcnt, they won't require newer instructions sets soon and when they do it will just kill one or two generations of the i series.

There are shit tons of people posting about windows issues too. More than there are posting about Linux issues, although that's to be expected.
Actually I had a lot of issues on windows myself which I couldn't figure out despite being extremely familiar with all parts of the os. Namely one issue I could never solve was a massive performance drop in the network stack on uploads. No clue what caused or why, but only a restart fixed it.

I finally dropped $550 on a newerish T14 thinkpad just a week ago since my 2012 T530 win7 workhorse is finally showing compatibility issues with some of my utilities, firefox is losing support and Master Duel's graphics update cruely kicked me off.

Fucking hate the thing, people saying 14in screens are fine are memeing and not having audio bars on either side is such a noticable downgrade it makes me want to tear my ears off. I also swapped from the preinstalled 11 to win10 ltsc IOT within a day, I really wanted to give it a fair shake and updated everything but within TWO HOURS of Yugiohing, all audio suddenly cut off mid duel, and then 2 minutes later the fucking thing forced closed EVERYTHING, WITHOUT WARNING, just to tell me to pretty please update again right this second thanks :)

Jesus fuck I was so god damn mad, give me OSes at EOL on laptops I could 3 tap kill a man with again you fuckers!! I can't even upgrade your shitty fucking soldered RAM unless I buy the $1400 gen 5 models!!!

I'm probably upgrading my main storage some time this year though, so I'll set the new storage up to whatever that fuckin' setting is supposed to be set to, THEN I'll think about "up"grading to 11. I've switched to Linux. CachyOS, because I'm not autistic enough yet for Arch. A fresh OS install using 1% of my disk and ~5% of RAM is pretty refreshing coming from Windows. Biggest headache so far has been setting up dual boot with Windows.
>replace firmware keys
>sign linux kernel and bootloader
>enable secure boot
>remove linux ssd to quarantine it while I install windows on a second drive
>windows nukes my bootloader's EFI entry anyway, have to repair it
Kind of hairy but also fun to figure this stuff out.

Already upgraded my laptop to Arch Linux and it's great but I don't game on it.
Sadly I have to use Adobe software so switching off Windows isn't gonna be easy when it comes to my desktop PC. I might have to bite the bullet and get a Macbook for Adobes bullshit so I can then freely install Arch on my desktop PC as well.

Still feeling this out but I know I want to get rid of Windows.

I have a (secondary) Windows 10 pc that I only use to play Dragon Ball The Breakers. This game "used" to work on Linux up to Season 5, but after that there have been Easy Anti-Cheat bullshit that has stopped the game from working on Linux ever since (compatibility with Steam Deck has been spotty. Technically the game runs right now on Deck, but as of late it'll disconnect you from the servers when you've been in a game for a few minutes)

They need to figure that shit out before Windows 10 end of life.

LTSC is outdated and IOT is feature limited. it is for idiots. Especially when you can have an up-to-date build 19045.6159 with 3 fucking years of free ESU security updates whilst compromising 0% of latest windows drivers models.

I use linux on both my nvidia systems. It works fine, I just wish there was a full nvidia control panel or at least a cli that let you set all the commands that would be used in the control panel. I had problems running FFVII rebirth smoothly and one of the solutions involved limiting the FPS in the nvcp, which I could never figure out how to do. There is a control panel but it is obtuse to say the least and some options are just not there.

Don't be afraid of Windows 11 gamers. It can be amazing IF you know the secret sauce.

I'm going to bed so don't have time to spoon feed you, but a great place to start is O&OShutup10, Revo Uninstaller, learn powershell+winget to upgrade apps, Windows Sandbox to test out apps you're not sure what BS they're installing, Malwarebytes Firewall Control to see what apps are doing over the internet, and Windows Services and Startup apps...block what you don't need. Bleachbit if your PC starts getting filled with too much shit (which won't happen if you use Revo and Sandbox). HWmonitor for temps and Wiztree if your harddrive is filling up with something and you're not sure what it is.

I run Windows on a tiny Beelink PC I paid <300 and this thing runs quick and smooth. I also have a gaming PC just for that and it works great!

Just, don't fuck with the OS. All the apps I mentioned are just pausing the fat, NOT cutting it out. None of it is changing Windows.

I googled it and found an article saying that 11th gen Intel CPUs are now the minimum which sounded absurd and the article was written by a woman so I looked deeper and it seems the only new hard requirement is that the CPU can execute SSE4.2 instructions. Interestingly they've dropped the official requirement for TPM in 24H2 IoT.

> IOT is feature limited
That's a good thing. Windows LTSC literally has higher fps in games because there is less bullshit in the background spiking CPU demand randomly

Oh no. So you are telling me my Windows install doesn't have ads in the start menu and doesn't come preinstalled with eight different useless xbox apps? Are you seriously telling me that my sestem comes clean without cortana or copilot or recall or any other spyware bullcrap monitoring my every action 24/7?
Shit. I guess I fucked up big time. What am I going to do now?

Truly eye opening.

Most malware doesn't use any vulnerabilities, it just uses the retarded meatbag administering the system to infect. Windows 7 has a firewall enabled by default so it's not going to be infected by something scanning the Internet unless the user specifically turns the firewall off and then also does not have NAT.

If 10 LTSC breaks because no more drivers, even though I mostly play old games, I'll think about 11 LTSC+debloat or mint or something.

there is absolutely no reason for a fucking OS to have the requirements that W11 does

>new pcs have windows 11 by default
no matter what, windows 10 is gonna die and microsoft is doing everything they can to make that happen faster.
there's no world where windows 10 keeps going, this isn't linux where you can fork gnome and have a working system 15 years later.
