Roguelikes are based

>>717644042
Rogue Legacy, while responsible for being one of the founding games of the RNG Progression genre/fake Roguelikes, isn't that bad
It's a fun game

The two main reasons that fake Roguelikes/RNG Progression games are common today is Binding of Issac and Slay the Spire. Both of them heavily rely on RNG to get by. Can you technically beat BoI with zero heart ups and zero tear+ items in some way (damage/speed/20/20 item/ etc) yes.
Can you beat StS while getting utter shit cards and relics in shops? Yes

But both require large amounts of RNG

All RL did was add in the concept of 'you got some gold, spend it, try again'. It didn't shove things like 'bro here's an extra 3x damage in the first 10 minutes' or 'bro you didn't get enough damage ups, well fuck you cause this room kinda required you to get lucky and get those to avoid being in bullet hells you can't dodge'

Rogue likes are fucking boring and only done so lazy game devs can generate more "content" out of recycling game assets over and over again

Just want to say the man with the highest eden winstresk is in the thousands. Yes some runs will fuck you over but you have so so so many ways of getting items in isaac that its practically impossible to get literally nothing good in a run. If you feel like you dont have at least something useable by mom than generally theres some type of optimization you messed up. Not saying its not an rng game, but its hard for me to think of other games that halndle rng like isaac does.

So? It's one of the popularisers of roguelike elements in non-roguelike games. It's the earliest one I can remember that people actually referred to it that way, as the "roguelike platformer" or whatever, and I'm fairly certain it's the one that sold indie devs on the idea. BOI was part of the roguelite deluge that followed that.

'wins' aren't hard, anon in Isaac, if you exploit things

The point I was making is that until mods were introduced regularly the game itself was highly reliant on RNG

also I only consider a win run when I kill The Beast. If you count basic black bitch as wins then Issac isn't an RNG Progression game. It's a game for retards

>>717645189
NTA but the issue with Spelunky was that it wasn't meant to be anything like Rogue. It just took the idea of 'a new level each time' like fucking Minecraft does on a new world

I'm pretty sure the developer of spelunky specifically talked about it being inspired by roguelikes at the time. Also I don't have an issue with it, it's not a roguelike but it's a good game. It's just annoying that lots of people call all the games that came afterwards roguelikes. In reality they're mostly games loosely inspired by a platformer which was loosely inspired by roguelikes, they're not even close.

Anonymous No.717645897

The difference is Spelunky is actually like Rogue while BoI is very much a roguelite. BoI doing rng upgrades and builds and lose to win shit is what popularised those designs.
Anonymous No.717645949
>>717645891
I don't think it is.
It was inspired by Roguelikes but it never claimed to be a roguelike or worse, a roguelite. At least originally.

The bigger two were Issac and Spire

>'wins' aren't hard, anon in Isaac, if you exploit things
Well yes thats just called "using the games mechanics"
>The point I was making is that until mods were introduced regularly the game itself was highly reliant on RNG
That doesnt really address my point nor did i ever feel like i needed mods to make it playable. Unless youre calling the dlc mods? I dont really know why you brought this up desu beyond just saying you feel like you need to mod isaac which is cool i guess.
>also I only consider a win run when I kill The Beast.
Eden winstreaking requires a specific ruleset which involes cycling through all the final bosses, except delirium. So yes that includes the beast. Also idk why youd say that the beast route is incredibly easy, prpbably only beaten by just the normal blue baby route. Runs are shorter, you get planetariums for no downside. The the reverse levels are really quick to just run through and ignore everything.

All of this is pretty irrelevant to my origional point which was that isaac is definitely an incredibly rng reliant game, but it floods you with so many opportunities to get good items that rng isnt really a factor. If anything id consider the whole game a knowledge check for if you know how every specific mechanic works, kind of like a weird proto noita.

Second off, thats not even related to the beast route being difficult or not.

Yeah, retard, that's the entire point; generating the maximum amount of gameplay hours with the minimum amount of development hours. Back in the day they just made games stupid hard or full of traps to bilk quarters out of you, but now they need something different so that people can feel like they got a really good deal when they play their 5 dollar steam sale game for 600 hours.
