But my schizo theory is that The Cave of the Past is meant to be a representation/a physical manifestation of what Giygas’ Magicant would look like (which is why his Mani Statue is out in the wild unlike Ness’). COTP is dead and gray and metallic because while he can do the impossible and physically retreat to the past, his mind cannot, because it’s been ruined by fear to the point of actual mental retardation that he can’t even recall why he was obsessed with Ness properly.
I think the metallic motif on the Mother 3 logo is emblematic of this too, the cold steel eroding against the wood is a symbol of loss of self. Giygas, and Porky and especially his extension Masked Man, is this loss.

I don't think it's really meant to make sense in terms of continuity. The entire game is about encountering stuff that seems way scarier when you're a kid (Like crazy adults) and the final boss is you being confronted with an entity totally obliterated from infantilism, which is put back to sleep through a lullaby (Remembering he was loved at some point)

If there's anything to infer from what inspired the final boss, it's the concept of seeing or thinking things you weren't prepared for annihilating your sense of reason, and allowing it to define your actions or perceptions as an adult
