Jak and Daxter's biggest problem was that the franchise didn't know what it wanted to be
Jak 1 was a basic platformer/collectathon because Naughty Dog was still growing out of its Crash Bandicoot roots
Jak 2 became a gritty GTA clone after GTA3 came out and the world collectively went "Holy shit this is the best game ever", and this was also when edgy shit started becoming vogue, so the tone was completely different from the more cartoony first entry
Jak 3 was another GTA clone except now it hyper-focused on the vehicle aspect, and because of that, everything else kind of floundered in terms of quality, especially the writing, so it was kind of disappointing that the last game in the mainline series was so underwhelming
It's not that any of these games are TERRIBLE on their own, but as a series, Jak and Daxter is easily the weakest and least consistent of the mascot platformers.
