Because it was a mostly original and cool sci-fi setting.
Warcraft ripped off a bunch of shit like Tolkien and The Witcher.

Sc plays faster and is more consistent than WC. In WC you start the map with a single worker and you have to BUILD the god damn central building to start mining and building more workers. It's literally just a minute of watching your building being built which feels like forever. The camera is pretty zoomed in so you can barely do any manouvers or anything. It feels VERY basic.

SC couldn't be built without WC though, which felt like trial runs and experiemtns.

>posts that give me aneurysms.

No one knew what the hell The Witcher was in the 90s until the games blew up. Warcraft was ripping off Warhammer, and Starcraft ripped off Warhammer 40K.

Dragoons? Spider tank assaulters where Zealots go after they "die" to be reborn as cyborgs. Dreadnaughts in 40K are the SAME THING.

sci fi is only cool when it actually deals with futuristic themes instead of being another mythical story but with a technological paint job

starcraft is not it

Significantly higher effort artstyle, asymmetrical game balance, great story, great voice acting, fantastic online play, memorable campaign with variety in playstyle, overall higher production values.

most macho men are gay af
>post pictures and worship half naked men
>only want other men in their stories
>are repulsed by femininity in general
the only time when this is not cringe is in puberty when boys attempt to separate themselves from the girls to become men. if you keep acting like that in adulthood then it means you failed to become a man and still have to rely on those old defense mechanisms

there is a reason why ships have female names

I like to pretend WoW doesn't exist and the WC RTS games are only inferior to SC in terms of compfagging. It's superior in all other aspects otherwise. SC has zero personality as a franchise, hence why it only lasted two games and they never did anything else with it afterwards.

Because it was built off of Warcraft 2's design (ie, Age of Empires style) whereas Warcraft 3 went a totally different route.

>Significantly higher effort artstyle,

The initial build was another top down sprite artwork game like Warcraft 2, but it got mocked for being ugly, and another RTS used pre-processed sprites built from 3D models so that's what SC went with. Dominion was using faked trailers, and was horribly delayed, and the game ended up being shit. but it played a role in shaping SC.

One result of this is that the game's engine and logic treats the entire game as top down, but the game's visuals are presented as an isometric angle. The result in some weird quirks that look like they shouldn't work but do.

Other way around. Warcraft is so similar to Warhammer it's just changing some names around.

SC is clearly borrowing from 40K, but changes enough. Rather than a singular holy emperor, Confederate leadership and the rebels are led by corrupt individuals. Confederacy borrows a lot obviously from the American confederates, but there's a lot from Tsarist Russia as well, with the Mengsk playing the role of Lenin/Stalin hybrid.

Space Marines are disposable grunts rather than elites. The setting borrows from the Russian Empire and soviet Union in terms of society and unit comp, and they borrow a lot from the American confederacy. The Terran army is more or less just the USSR's field army. Disposable cheap brainwashed soldiers from the dregs of society, heavy amounts of artillery, tanks, minefields, and vultures act like BMPs. Zerg and Protoss armies in contrast are properly alien.

Protoss and zerg at the time were very unique. It's in fact the Tyrion that massive redesigned the race to mimic the Zerg, not the other way around.

Warhammer and Warcraft are too similar to Tolkein, D&D, and lack a proper identity. In fact, it's foolish that both D&D and Warhammer never tried RTS games as they're perfect settings for it.

How is wc3 inferior to starcraft 1 or 2 in gaysports? Both have rng. Both have skill caps that are past human capabilities, or at least WC3 & BW. When Starcraft 2 was relevant most good western players had wc3 rather than BW background.

>Space Marines are disposable grunts rather than elites.
noteworthy: the description of the marines in the SC manual very closely skews toward 1st edition 40k space marines, with many of them being murderhobos who found their skills put to better use in the military

I don't know about broodwar but I find Warcraft III extremely cheesy. Everyone and I mean it everyone but literal pros (most of the time) easily gets destroyed by failure to scout, tower rush, greedy fast tech, all in, proxy buildings etc.
And what about legitimate strategies? Oh you know. Turtling, nuking heroes with spells, stuns, slows, early summon spam, bodyblocking, ignoring opponent and creeping map for 20 minutes, expanding all over in big maps and spamming siege engine, general orc laming.
The perfect RTS for subhumans who hate fun.

Starcraft + Brood War had personality, it was gritty and brutal but also campy. Kind of like army of darkness but a little less silly.

It was SC 2 that threw that all out. Probably because the lead writers were now successful artists who could afford trophy wives and have kids so they werent being powered by "tortured artist" meme powers and wanted to write happy ending disney movie type crap that would make their infants happy.

Yeah. Brood War left the story off at a very interesting point. The entire story was pretty original and it had a lot of dramatic events. Very entertaining story.
sc2 kept making the story worse and worse with every expansion. It was shit. And it was cliched too. Which is a terrible shame because there was a lot of thought gone into the lore and backstory of the game. Blizzard released a small collection of short stories during the sc2 pre-launch period. I think that I read all of them. My favourite by far was "Brokenwide". The story of a terran medic in the front lines witnessing the zerg further their own evolution before her very eyes. Blizzard had a lot of talented writers at this point of it's lifespan but the story that they told with sc2's main campaign was pure hollywoodslop even for it's time. The only good thing though is that the story feels like it could still go on. Thankfully with very little to do with Kerrigan.

Not being tile based made things feel a lot more smoother. It also had a level of scripting that you didn't see in other games at the time, part because they made it very accessible.
Also it got a ton of balance patches for the time.
