Megatexture is the proprietary name for the technique in Id's software. Virtual texturing is the generic term, and as the technique has evolved it's the name the general graphics community has adopted. A megatexture is a "sparse virtual texture".

Games need to focus on gameplay though, and while having a unique high-resolution texture for every surface in the game is cool, it's also not really that important. Especially when your game needs to scale down to consoles without a lot of texture bandwidth to throw around. Id is still using them I believe (the new Doom/Wolfensteins?), and I think Crytek incorporated them too. UE4 has them built in.

Actually this. I would gladly play games in 1080p til the rest of my life if in return I'll get stable 120fps. but with modern ai/rtx slop i get neither

They ended up using virtual texturing in the Wolfenstein New Order and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus games and it worked out great, it was just undercooked in RAGE

I thought this worked pretty well for the broad strokes of Rage like the big terrain parts where you were in your vehicle and things like buildings. But as well all know, it didn't work so well for finer details, and I think part of the blame was object clutter was poorly modeled. I get that chairs, desks, pipes, etc. are probably mudane work as a modeler but damn, have a little pride.
