A lot of thought, passion, research, and hard work went into it. Every horse’s story, every horse’s design. The training heavy gameplay with roots in old PC style japanese games like princess maker, the complex breeding mechanics, the deck building aspect too. A ton of thought and polish went into the game. Voice acting is top notch, the 3d models have a come long way since the early trailers, the animations are good, the races are exciting, there’s nothing overtly obnoxious about the game that doesnt overstay its welcome. Training careers can be as long or short as you want and you get a generous amount of stamina to do at least a few runs everyday. The more I think about it’s clear just how much fucking effort went not into making just the game, but the entire multimedia franchise at once. Assembling all the talent, all the voice actors, detailed backstories and interactions for alllll those story scenarios, all the support card events. There’s just a lot of shit and this is all base game enough. And you dont need to pay a single penny to get the most out of it. I say this as a light spender but my extra shekel to get the $20 starter pass or whatever barely gives me a leg up over the purely f2p guy.

I think that’s part of the secret sauce of what makes Uma such a compelling gacha game compared to its peers. CyGames didnt really have room to fuck up, and the entire thing was extremely close to crashing and burning before it even got off the ground. This was their final gambit. The game HAD to be successful or it was over, so they made sure they did everything in their power to make it the best it can be. There was simply no room for halfasssing this one or else it was over for them. They needed a hit and by a miracle they were able to pull it off. Yeah, who would have thought a game like this would have such wide appeal outside of Japan but it really drives home the point that there is something universally appealing about Umas, the game, the stories. Just all of it. But if the game sucked, I dont think the animes/movies alone would be enough to carry it. The game is just expertly designed in every way, I dont know where to start but they MAKE it look easy. This game has so much shit going on under the hood it’s insane the amount of work and planning that had to go into making the damn thing work, let alone making it actually fun and addictive. It’s core gameplay really does draw heavily from old school PC games so that isnt really revolutionary, but it’s a very solid core with a ton of complex systems wrapped around it and interacting with another. Like the spark system at first glance might not seem like a lot but there is a shit ton of complexity in that one mechanic alone.
