No, I think there is just the right amount of characterisation. The protag should ideally be a blank slate self-insert and the alignment reps should have just enough for you to relate to their ideals, but not to them as individuals per se. They shouldn't just be cardboard cutouts, but they can't be your persona buddies either, the inevitable split has to feel natural.
The dynamic of SMT IV's party managed the above well.

It has nothing to do with the defense stat. Nocturne doesn't have a defense stat and everything works fine. It's the lack of balance for enemy HP values and skill damage. Not poor balance, no balance. The game was rushed, all the demons use their unadjusted stat values that are uniform across the game. This includes HP, they just took a shot in the dark for HP pools for bosses, regular demons use their laughably low HP values as if they're in a player's party. Basically it plays like Pokemon.

My main issue with this is that if they ever decide to remake the 3DS games, they will remove the soulful animated sprites. Always liked how fast-paced they looked along with the background as well.
I just want a port instead.

Doing an actual spiritual successor of SMT 1 means you start out as a person in the real world and then the real world is destroyed midgame, which sounds hard and expensive with modern standards. Like racing games have been afraid to do city courses since the PS3 era because it's so hard to build the assets.
