I have not had Skyrim uninstalled since it was released in 2011. I've literally been playing the game regularly for 14 years. Todd is a god amongst men to have made so amazingly good a game. Fun fact: I've only ever played the main quest once.

I haven't upgraded my PC for years and honestly it's kinda of a pain in the ass to install.
When you know what you're doing things rarely ever "break" in any serious sense, but you'll constantly run afoul of minor problems that require you to look up the issue to try and fix. Even if you do, that's somewhat exhausting.
It's also not very healthy. Back in like 2021 or something when I last installed I was gooning non stop to it.

It does take hours to shift through 1000's of mods to find those you want to use.
Also there's the problem of most mods not working nowadays because Jewthesda keeps making pointless updates to the game that don't do anything except breaking mod compatibility.
By the time you're done modding the game, you're so exhausted mentally that you won't even enjoy playing the modded game anymore.

It’s basically in that awkward limbo where people have made a bunch of frameworks and some decent QoL mods, but the real crazy stuff (quests, overhauls, coom-tier content) is still crawling. Between the dull base game and limited modding tools at launch, momentum never really took off like it did with Skyrim or even Fallout 4. Modders are slowly injecting life into it, but without a passionate playerbase to demand stuff, most just pivot back to Skyrim or NV where their work actually gets seen.

It's hard to mod since there's no tutorials or documentation. Also there's some pretty bad bugs with the creation kit (made a big ass settlement mod, only for the CC to fuck up and apply 1000% brightness to everything I selected, which basically made it impossible to see/place anything). It feels like it's more effort than it's worth atm and no one knows if Bethesda is even invested in the game anymore so that's not helping.

Starfield modding scene was doomed from the start. TES and Fallout have 20+ years of previous games to draw from plus tons of pop culture because they are familiar, fun settings (medieval-adjacent fantasy and post-apocalypse). Starfield has none of that because it's the most sterile and boring space setting possible. It's not high fantasy scifi with aliens and impossibly advanced technology and it's not gritty low scifi like Cowboy Bebop, it just takes the worst from both. And as if all that weren't bad enough, it's also a shitty, ugly game with zero charm.

If Starfield was a good game, people would mod it. Skyrim was a cultural phenomenon which is why it has over a hundred thousand mods. Starfield was one of those "well, that just happened" games which barely anybody considers to be memorable.

Now if they engooden Starfield, like they did to No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk then there's a small chance it would start getting more modding interest in the future. For the moment though, Skyrim is here to stay.
