how can "they" join if they are dead?

I actually don't know. It's not everyday I encounter a playable character who is already dead.

It’s that classic JRPG necromancy loophole. “Oh no, you didn’t *kill* them, you just beat the darkness out of them!” Suddenly they wake up with partial amnesia and a new haircut, and now they’ve got a redemption arc. Bonus points if they still call you “foolish” for five hours after joining.

>villain is portrayed as a massive badass
>gets killed
>doesn't cop out and say he barely survived, he's literally dead but refuses to stop existing because fuck you
>joins your party because he respects the law of the jungle

Phrolova isn't exactly an undead, and canonically (currently), she's just a lingering frequency (spirit in WuWa logic) stuck in a simulated world. She never joined the MC's party, but she's playable.

Because JRPG logic laws are stronger than real laws, anon. You "killed" them, yes, but did you delete their data from the plotline? No? Then congrats, they're recruitable now. Besides, if a villain's body disappears in a cutscene, that just means they respawned in the Character Select screen.
