I don't know, Skibidy toilet was pretty successful to make gen alpha aware of them. But I'm a 30+ millennial what do I know.

War of the Servers is still one of the best adaptions of Wells' novel.

Better animation tools. Why try to make a movie in Garry's Mod or The Sims when you can learn to use Source Filmmaker or Blender instead?

I remember the week Machinima died like it was yesterday. 2009 had plenty of Halo 3 content to go around like Matchmaking and Spriggs, and people were beginning to expand into other games to stand out. Inside Gaming WHERE THE FUCK IS SODAGOD was the channel's flagship series that drew in tens of thousands every week, which was quite good at the time. Happy content, happy fans, more Halo 3 content and Reach was announced. Things are looking bright. What could possibly go wrong?

Everything changed in November with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Less than a week after the game's release, it became abundantly clear to everyone that machinima based videos were dead in favor of easily mass produced, low effort commentary. Why spend weeks on editing and voice acting when you could instead record a game of yourself clowning on some noobs and talk into a mic like you just rolled out of bed? By the time the containment channel, MachinimaRespawn, was created to prevent the main channel from being flooded, the damage was already done. Only titans like Arby 'n the Chief remained.
>But what about Master Chief War?
That came later. It was the only Master Chief video that Lyle would ever upload to Machinima.

If you are making Halo 3 machinima, should you bob your character's head while they are talking?

Wasn't skibidi toilet made with SFM? That hardly counts

Machinimas were a result of people using what they had. College kids and teenagers wanted to make funny skits and short films to post on the internet but didn't have the same free animation software we have today, so they had to use vidya.

I remember when this game came out lol. I had a full friendlist of people who logged in daily, back then people just sent invites and chatted like crazy on every game so it was pretty normal. I got to watch 90% of my friend list permanently swap to mw2 when it released and never came back to the other games I was playing at the time. Even guys I used to play fuckin harmony of despair with frequently put it down forever for cod.

It's a relict of a bygone era but it really is a shame it's gone. Here in Poland making machinimas with the Gothic games was a really big deal and these days there are a handful of guys still making those types of videos.

The OP question is what killed Machinimas, not what killed GMOD Machinimas.
Anonymous No.717673295 >>717673347

I didn't mention Gmod, my point was that stuff with made witht SFM is an animation rather than a machinima.

Fair enough.

In my opinion, it's two things happening:
First, SFM was huge when it came out as it allowed people to do Source stuff while having actual animation tools available like setting up keyframes and editing motion curves. Then, Blender gradually turned into an actually capable product that people slowly moved towards despite its awful interface (t. C4D babby).
Second, there haven't really been many machinima-friendly games released. Modding has become less of a thing in many games, and you're lucky if you get a replay mode with scriptable cameras in a game nowadays to make a basic defrag movie. Nothing like Garry's Mod that lets you do anything you want with existing game assets.

Selling out to Machinima, selling out in general
New tools were too good and resulted in soulless overproduced slop, instead of soulful jury-rigged clips just filmed in-game strung together. Mirroring how CGI and post production killed movie magic, when you think about it

we had a small revival for this on /v/ but I lost all my save progress and DLC somehow when sony decided I just didn't own it or a bunch of other games I bought on ps3
