It is far, far too dull and boring visually to be successful no matter whatever merits it may or may not have in its actual gameplay.
I really do think it could genuinely be one of the most impressive multiplayer games made in the history of the medium, and it'd still struggle to be successful if this is how the game looks.
And it kind of surprises me too. This is a Nintendo developed game after all. Whatever criticisms you may have of Nintendo, they're usually rather good at character design.
Like, ignore that ARMS is already a game. If you had taken all the ARMS characters and put them in wheelchairs and then adjusted the game arena to match the style. That would have already been a huge, huge improvement to the game visually.
Weird game.
