>huge generational hardware leap between 2 main series titles
>the new game is basically a direct downgrade on all fronts from the previous except maybe graphically, could easily have been made on the NES anyway
How did the mario series survive super mario world being the sequel to super mario bros 3?

Golly, let's beak this down as it why that could be
>SMB3 was made 5 years after Famicom released
>SMW was a launch title
And that explains it.
Also, I like SMW more than SMB3.

Has anyone put bros 3 levels in the world engine using Mario maker? Are they any fun?

Yeah mario 1 sold much worse than 3 too. It really isn't the groundbreaking earthquake that Mario 1 was. It's relevance is massively overinflated. Always thought it was weak compared to 1 even at the time it was released.

Womp womp. Looks like the original was the best. Looks like the sequels were sloppy as fuck and people didn't buy them. Womp womp.

Not true. Nintendo couldn't get Yoshi to work right on the NES.
The big centrepiece gimmick needed the console which warranted the new game.

Miyamoto was director on 3 and much more hands-on in development. Takashi Tezuka took over as director on World.

Did you mix them up? Also mario 3 is a perfectly logical step forward from 1. 2 (doki doki panic) was a good game but very much unrelated to 1, 3 expands on pretty much everything 1 introduced. World doesn't even feel as deep and as polished as 3, looks like a NES game, and basically only expands on the exploration aspect, but even then, there are no hidden passages on the maps, no inventory, no toad houses, no enemy stages

Yes I got them mixed up. I think that adding bells and whistles will never yield better sales than a true innovation.

Complete mental illness. Name one fucking thing Super Mario Bros 3 does better than Super Mario World.

Yoshi is a pretty weak gimmick gameplay wise. He only uses temporary, situational powerups with the shells, is annoying to retrieve when you get hit, there is I think only 1 hidden passage to find using yoshi, he can't enter ghost houses and fortresses (literally why)
The only important thing about yoshi is that he looks great and immediately was a smash hit character. He was merely a marketing ploy.

Low IQ retard. There's a huge amount of gameplay depth added by Yoshi.

It was more Mario. Everyone had played the shit out of Mario 3 by the time the SNES came out. More Mario = win.

Literally what? Being able to kill like 2 enemies that mario can't kill? Walking on spikes that is only useful once (mario 3 already did that with the shoe btw)

They struggle with controlling the character and the camera with separate thumbs. We take it for granted, but it's a majour hurdle for the majority of the market.

When Yoshi eats shells he gains new abilities depending on the shells.
Can be used to reach unreachable areas.
Can walk on things Mario can't.
Can be used to solve puzzles and access new routes in the game Mario can't

The list goes on. This one simple addition adds more depth and gameplay variety than all of worthless meme suits from Mario 3 added together.

Not to mention Mario World is just a far bigger and better game than Mario 3, whose huge sprawling levels shit all over Mario 3's tiny simplistic ones.

With better tighter controls and gameplay focused on exploration and puzzle solving rather than brain-dead running from left to right.

Mario World rapes Mario 3 so hard it's honestly painful to watch.

This is all true, the problem is this only happens like 3 times in the whole game. The power ups that yoshi has are literally all shittier, temporary versions of mario's powerups. Even the ground pound thing is just a slightly wider cape spin attack (which is literally the raccoon from mario 3 btw)
>whose huge sprawling levels shit all over Mario 3's tiny simplistic ones.
This also applies to like 4 levels total between the first and second world, most other levels later in the game are classic platform challenges. Sure there are some cool ideas like the chocolate island level that changes based on how many coins you have and shit, but most levels aren't sprawling at all

NTA, but
SMW has better secrets, better levels on an overall scale, the ability to replay levels, and a better world map.

SM3 has better powerup variety, better individual levels, better bosses, more interesting world maps, and the best gimmick in Giant Land.

Super Mario Bros. 1 was bundled with the NES from 1985 onwards. If you were to remove all of the bundled system sales and just look at the stand alone sales, the original Super Mario Bros. would probably end up being one of the worst selling Mario games. The same could be said for Super Mario World, as it was bundled with the SNES from day one.

it leaned into exploration and secrets, a big connected map, branching paths, and dozens of hidden exits.
