They're puzzle games with some (enjoyable) fluff that involves the story, music, art, etc between the puzzles (or are part of).

It's always the dialogue that comes back to me in P&C games. A shame I haven't found too many modern ones that tickle my fancy besides the usual stuff Wadjet Eye releases.

puzzles, story, atmosphere. They also often make for good youtube fodder when you're trying to fall asleep. If you want a really engrossing horror adventure game, check out the The Excavation of Hob's Barrow
