One of the chief reasons for the decline of gaming is graphics evolving to first semi- and, in recent years, borderline photorealistic levels, which prompted the cancerous trend of the "cinematic experienceโ€. This formed a certain state of mind that games must be ashamed of being games and should be more like movies.
That in turn attracted a host of failed wannabe movie/tv writers to the medium. So we ended up with games that are shallow mechanically because they don't want to be games and written terribly because they adopted the shitty HBO/Netflix writing.

Not reading your OP
MMLniggers always post "sovlful" webms when it's always anime cutscenes
Not ONCE have I seen the actual gameplay

>OP talks about gaming failing because it's being treated like movies
>posts a webm which is a game that notably only ever gets webms made of its cutscenes

>noo why are people posting parts of the game that show off the visuals when talking about game visuals
He's clearly talking about live action movies and the ilk they attract compared to gamey looking games (which can still do their own style of narrative as evidenced by MML)

Graphics should conform to gameplay.

Well soulsshit and zeldashit do the exact same thing and everyone's been sucking them off for decades so I'd say it works, especially for a 3D pioneer game

There's something very endearing about the art style, animations and color palette of this game. My favorite part was the abandoned city area where you see the first dogs I believe.

There's an anime movie that deals with this concept but telling you what it is would spoil it for you

you're describing the phenomenon backwards. what happened is in order to expand the audience, video games had to appeal to people who don't like video games, which lead to prioritizing "realistic" styles over "cartooony" styles, then bigger teams lead to a complete inability to have a style other than realism, then the competency crisis creeps in and now they can't even make games that look good and run well, but they don't care because they think hardware will improve and make up for their incompetence, which generates more bloat.

this need to appeal to people who don't like video games has driven every bad decision in the industry for a couple decades

This scene was a huge shocker to me. I thought Volnutt wasn't wearing power suit
