Partly because you had less of them to play at any given time, so you weren't constantly thinking of the next thing. They were also designed with this in mind. The economy and culture have sped up immensely, and everything is produced with this in mind now. Immersion is inherently slow.

It's bizarre to me how the original is more immersive than the remaster. I don't know if it's shareholders or just lack of talent, but wtf happened to devs having an eye for art?

There's no real barrier of entry anymore. I think the internet plays a large part in that but idk for sure. they just need to start hiring talented artists for games again and keep mediocrity out

For a similar reason reading books is more immersive than watching movies, when games couldn't have realistic graphics they relied heavily on stylization, letting your brain do the work and fill in the gaps

Shenmue is a standout case just because nothing else has been as detailed in all the small interactions and dialogue. Its game design is immersive, not its graphics.

I feel like limited resolution and polygon counts made everything look more coherent. Lighting was also much more limited, but this also meant that if the devs have put their time into lighting, that meant they really cared about how something should look. Nowadays there's a ton of games where the visuals clash, all jankiness contasts greatly with detailed models and lighting is more realistic, but not carefully thought out. It's the difference between a carefully composed drawing and a just some random photo you took with your phone.

Because in the case of Shenmue 1, the game world feels alive regardless of whether you're in it, the world exists without you. Where NPC's have routines and feel like they actually are living their lives in this world as you are just passing through. They don't just spawn in because you're there too, they are following another script that is independent from yours. This idea is still so advanced that it has rarely been in games since. A few that come to mind that touch on it a little is games like Deadly Premonition and Shadows of Doubt. And perhaps STALKER's A-LIFE system is a different version of said idea, i still don't think RDR2 was anywhere near the same idea. Every NPC you see in Shenmue has a backstory, there is no random NPCs. They all have friends, places to be, and homes to go to. Follow an NPC around for a full day and you'll see this quite clearly.

It does take you out of the game when you are playing a game in an urban setting, and felt resemblance to the fantasy game you just played previously because they shared the same UE5 engine, or utilizes the same marketable Nvidia RTX tech or some shit.

i think artstyle has a big part to play too. it seems like modern games all use the same couple art styles and never really experiment. its not like there isnt a bunch of cool artists out there to collaborate with..

idk I feel like immersion lies in the details. shenmue is immersive because its interactions are very detailed for its graphics. if we recreated it with more realistic graphics however, then every bit of awkwardness would be highlighted. but if we took the same design philosophy and used more realistic graphics AND more detailed and natural interactions then the game would actually be more immersive.
Think of it this way: old game - an npc is reading a newspaper which just has a blurry texture; modern game - an npc is reading a newspaper which has a high quality texture, but is just filled with lorem ipsum; future game - an npc is reading a newspaper and there are actual articles which you can also read. Which one is more immersive?

it's just Shenmue that was just focused on immersion in a way nobody does today, because zoomers would go absolutely insane if you had to wait around and do side content for an hour in certain spots or having to actually investigate stuff in order to progress with no quest markers to guide them.
Man, Shenmue 2 is still one of the most kino game ever made, it's sad that the series' reputation took such a nosedive thanks to stupid memes from non-gamers and the awful 3rd game.
And maybe you just had to be there at the time. But the anime was released recently and it was good in it's own way.

The huge issue is that games are now meant to just look realistic instead of looking good. It seems like modern devs really don't understand that "realistic" games still need art direction, just like films do. Before, you would see "realistic" games that would still have hand crafted textures, models, skyboxes and so on. Now, a lot of times a tree is just a tree, a sky is just a sky, doesn't matter if you're in a dystopian future or medieval fantasy setting.

One aspect that many modern games can't get right is the soundtrack. Old games often had tracks connected to specific locations which made both more memorable. Music in modern games is much more subtle, so nothing stands out or has any specific mood to it.

I'd say that comment about modern games only really applies to a lot of AAA games. Indie games tend to still have great and memorable soundtracks.

Man, that's such a great argument that you can use it for literally anything.

I looked at your image. I see eye-bleeding colors the same static Myriad font next to NPCs doing the same static animations in a bustling marketplace with 4 locations total.
It looks like the best game 1998 ever produced and it still looks like crap.

Does "immersion" even mean anything other than "soul" to you?

Devs 20-30 years ago were extremely detail orientated and looking to push hardware to its absolute limits. Now the only people that get hired now are pajeets who are incapable of doing anything, or leftoids that are more obsessed with shoving their political messaging into whatever they're working on than actually making that thing good.

You'd make a great religious zealot.

There's a mystical self-evident thing. It's a huge deal but I can't explain why and the most we know about it is that you need to clasp your hands and kneel on the ground to accomplish whatever it is.

Your thread is a shitpost. Please contribute something else other than a picture of Pokemon Snap and saying "why don't games have SOUL" anymore.
