Unironically the story. DMC1 is *the* Dante game but it also has like three cutscenes total. It's super important to the events of the rest of the series (DMC3 is a prequel to it, DMC4 is a sequel, DMC5 has a quintillion references to it) but there's barely anything there because it was made in a cave with a box of scraps. Just look at how Trish is in 80% of the series but she neither has a character or a real playstyle. A DMC1 remake could fix that and a bunch of other problems.

After DMC5 was a massive fanservice fest that served to move past Dante and Vergil's rivalry, and cement Nero getting the torch passed to him, the series spinning its wheels with remakes instead of a 6th entry is the worst decision you could ever make.

Junya Kumabe was lead designer on 5SE (presumably Vergil), as well as a designer on vanilla 5 and DD2. If the series goes forward, he'd probably be the most likely to direct.

It would depend on how it's done. If Kamiya directed it, I'd hope that Capcom could restrain his autism regarding pace breaking minigames and constant QuickTime events. Bayonetta is almost unplayable for me because of that, and DMC1 shows the origins of that approach to gameplay with Kamiya.

It would probably lose all soul. I recently played it and I fucking love it BECAUSE it's barely devil may cry, it feels so much more like a Resident Evil game, it being originally a re4 prototype wasn't subtle, you get to read files, explore parts of the background as Dante comments on it like a detective, and I think the same sounds on stuff like opening doors or the inventory.

A remake shouldn't try to "make it in line" with the KUHRAYZEE entries like 3 and 5, but to bring the same resident evil feel to 2025. Except not even modern RE feels like RE, I guess they'd make it closer to the REmakes. More focus on survival, horror and very little humor.

I doubt it would be good, I can see a remake removing all of the Resident Evil influences and the fixed camera. About the only good thing a remake could bring would be more boss variety, everything else is very deliberately designed and has a specific purpose.

I think DMC 2 deserves the remake, 1 is fine as it is. It needs drastic changes to make it a fun fast paced game on par with the rest. It's a fucking tragegy and embarrassment that game is an official devil may cry entry. A remake that makes it good would help to memory hole the original forever.
