"Apples and oranges" is such a bitch-made anti-intellectual handwave, they're both video games, I might have 40 dollars in my pocket and have to decide between one and the other. It's a hard one. MGS is more gratifying to clear, replayable, but FFVII has way more in it. I might get pissed to clear MGS after 7 or so hours and learn that if I got FFVII instead I could be playing for 100.

Also the level design just sucking in general, it's so cramped there's nowhere to fucking hide so the guards are even more blind and retarded than usual to compensate

Every genre has its own merits that can be debated and we can also talk about how each game lives up to its genre
MGS is pretty obviously the better game because it presents actual challenge. FFVII does a lot to keep things feeling fresh as you play it, but its gameplay all feels like filler between the cutscenes regardless of what you're doing, which ironically makes it feel more of a movie game than MGS. You could probably set most of the game on auto battle and still win

Character animations still don't look this good today. Facial expressions really are what give life to a bunch of pixilated shapes, get that wrong and you're left in uncanny territory. Games should never have tried to go full realism.

honestly, I played Nintendo consoles since I started shitting in my diapers. started from NES all the way to the Gamecube (including Virtual Boy, it was on sale for less than 60 dollars at Electronics Boutique when it failed) i was burnt out from all the same games. The PS2 had more interesting titles. I wasn't trying to be like the other Millennial kids who thought they were too mature and "grown up" the formula got stale and boring. PS2 just has an incredible library which the Gamecube lacked.

i was spoiled because my brother would buy so many PS2/Gamecube games, never owned an Xbox. On top of that we had a PC back then and even played FF11 for abit.

Growing up in a playstation house, there's only ever been 2 console games that I've wanted to play that weren't available on PS; Halo and Metroid Prime.
I've played them since and they're great, but boy am I glad I had the PlayStation's library available growing up, because the other consoles just can't compete.

It's not petty, I wanted to try out new experiences. The bing bing wahoos were getting incredibly boring. Games like MGS and FF opened my eyes up to greater storytelling.
