After a few hours of E33 my exact thoughts were that I was feeling like back when I played my first JRPG (Chrono Cross), everything felt mysterious, fresh and new.
Before a couple of years pass and I replay E33, I'm not going to say it's on the level of my very favourite games, like CT, CC, Xenogears, FF8, Tales of Phantasia, Tales of the Abyss and so on, but even now I can say that it is a 10/10 game too.

It's not. Cross is it's opposite - saving the individual vs. Trigger's saving the world, but they need each other to exist. Without Trigger's cast succeeding, there would be no future, therefore no project Kidd. You could argue there would be no need for it if they hadn't fought Lavos, but that means dooming one dimension for the sake of other ones - which is also contrary to Cross. So basically the "mistakes" of Trigger had to be made, to create a context for Lavos to be defeated.

Is Chrono Cross a bad game in the standard sense? Probably not. If you tune out all of the plot, it's a half-decent tropical island-themed JRPG with good visuals and music. But in the context of being a followup to one of the best games ever, it's a total trainwreck of throwing out almost everything people liked in Trigger in favor of a batshit multiverse plot where pivotal lore amounts to footnotes in plot dumps and its campaign spends half of its play time body-swapping the MC with an evil furry so he can run around doing random chores.
