1. Kris used to freak Noelle out as a kid by pretending to rip out his own heart
2. Kris has demonstrated the capacity to actually remove a soul from his body
3. Kris having a soul is important to allow him to enter the dark world and remain a lightner
4. The knight, while ostensibly a darkner, is able to enter the light world, something it shouldn't be able to do

Before the game began, Dess Holiday was killed or badly injured. Kris removed his own soul and implanted it in her, or a darkner based on her. That's why it's so powerful and why it can exist in the light world. Carol knows about this and it's why she is happy with Kris and coordinating with him on whatever the next stage of their plan is.
