Cell has my favorite characters but it also has the worst writting.

I remember reading somewhere that Toriyama was pretty much improvising the whole thing with zero planning to keep up with the schedule. Also he constantly had to change the plot on the fly to appease the editor's demands. Thats why the saga has like 6 different villains

pretty much all the canon content from the final Goku vs Demon King Piccolo fight all the way to Majin Vageta's sacrifice was consistently fun. peak battle shonen. I don't know the exact chapters but my estimation is that it was from chapter 155 to chapter 467. something like 310+ chapters or 250 episodes or so. very little mistakes or boring moments. It's just one banger after the other. consistent and constant kino fun. From the final confrontation between Goku and Demon King Piccolo all the way to Majin Vageta sacrificing his life. and everything in between. That run was the greatest peak of Dragon Ball & long running battle shonen in general. we'll probably never see one like it again. I've read all of Naurto, Yu Yu Hakashu, Bleach, One Piece (until chapter 900), Hunter x Hunter, etc... and there is just no run of so many arcs back to back being so good or so much fun consecutively for hundreds of chapters. Even modern Dragon Ball (Super) didn't achieve this.

I'm the opposite. I didn't care for Gotenks when I was young because he didn't grind for his strength for years like the adults and he came across as bratty to me. But as an adult I love Gotenks because he is a fun loving kid that isn't too serious and he just has a good time while fighting. His funny ghosts add to the charm. Gotenks is what I'd call based.

I'm pretty sure that Gotenks is supposed to be a deliberately bad example of fusion to contrast Vegito. Sure, Gotenks has enough power to kill Buu three times over, but his components are immature kids, and their fusion only amplifies that, so it makes sense that he spends too much time screwing around and showboating to actually get the job done, and it also makes sense that Gotenks has been benched from doing anything important until Goten and Trunks have both done some growing up. Vegito on the other hand is comprised of two seasoned warriors who both have decades of experience, and had both matured enough to know when to stop fucking around and get to the point, and any fucking around Vegito did was part of his master plan, not to feed his ego.

I've taken a liking to using Z Gogeta lately. What's funny is he's a lot more smiley now when other games liked to make him serious and to the point. He did smile at the end of movie 12 though.

Sometimes the anime does give characters better justice than Toriyama ever did. Speaking of Future Gohan, I think I liked the most in Raging Blast 2.

Buu Saga had a lot of flaws, but it also introduced a lot of staples in the series. Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, fusion dance, Potara earrings, the Supreme Kais, Demon Realm, Ultimate Gohan, and several important characters like Videl, Goten, present Trunks, Fat Buu, Shin, Kibito, and Elder Kai.

It absolutely could have used a QC pass and several revisions to make it flow better, though. Toriyama should've taken a year long break between the two arcs to iron out the retcons and personality assassinations.

Gohan is somehow an adult, had unlocked Super Saiyan, and was fighting Androids weaker than the ones in the present timeline and was STILL getting his ass beat. It just makes no sense. Gohan should've one-tapped both Androids after going Super Saiyan at the age of 10.

Most of these were shit though. Videl was fine as a spunky, spats wearing tomboy qt but quickly lost her personality once she became gohan's girlfriend.

Simply have Goku die when Namek explodes in Trunks' timeline, and then make it so neither Future Gohan nor Future Vegeta have SSJ. There, the entirety of the Bad Future actually makes sense because now the Androids' strength scales properly.
