Honestly though, I think some people forget that Dawntrail legitimately has become a permanent barrier to entry in XIV.
Not only do you have to play through a massive MSQ story that takes you through all the other expansions just to get to current player content, which is already a big ask, you have to play through fucking Dawntrail.
It's a permanent stain on the MSQ that can only be resolved through buying a skip or the devs deciding otherwise allowing you to skip.
We already know existing players hate this shit, but how on earth are new players going to survive it?

Even beyond the terrible character the devs foist on you constantly, the story has zero internal consistency. The writers just forget plot points and events as frequently as they introduce new ones.
Just as a simple example that doesn't generally get a lot of emphasis,

Dawntrail has had some of the best designed fights in a long while, whether it's dungeons, trials or raids. And yet, that expansion killed the will to play for so many people. Free trial's an insane amount of stuff to do, every single expansion was at one point The Entire Game and you get three of them to explore and play through totally at your leisure.

Plenty of people do old content because of the way daily roulettes work but you'll probably struggle if you want to look at old Savage instances because you don't have access to the Party Finder as a free trial member. You'll also struggle with things that require gatherers/crafters or materia because you don't have Market Board access, which means you'll be forced to level those jobs up yourself and grind out the materia yourself, which adds an enormous timesink to things that are already a timesink.

I spent Endwalker post patches coping hard that Dawntrail was going to be a return to form and that 6.x was just a blip.
Then I spent 7.0 coping hard that the story is shit because they had things to set up but even then I couldn't make myself play it over 2-3 days like I normally would a new expansion launch, it took me a month to get through 7.0.
