Video games can tell stories that wouldn't work/aren't possible in conventional media by leveraging the unique aspects of the medium. That's when video game stories are at their best. Whenever a video game is just telling a normal story via the format of video game it will be mediocre, though.

If we want to talk about this unironically then I agree the "message" of Spec Ops The Line was a miss. But I still like the game because it's a retelling of Heart of Darkness and I like both that story and Apocalypse Now, and there are some kino elements to the game like how it feels like a psychological horror take on war and how there's a bunch of details and foreshadowings that you can easily miss the first time
I wish the developers went harder on the aspect of Walker and his squad breaking under the pressure and losing grip with reality as PTSD sets in, I unironically want a horror game where you play as a soldier dealing with some heavy war trauma like being a shellshocken soldier lost alone i the jungle during the vietnam war
Anyways I think Brigador actually did a way better job at providing "commentary" about war "collateral damage" and warcrimes
One moment you're just stomping around in your mech gunning down everything that moves, the next it gets quiet and you realize you were crushing innocent civilians, using residential buildings as cover, crushing suburban houses and firing piercing shells right through apartment blocks
And the game doesn't poke you and demand you to feel bad, YOU have to realize how you became numb to all this destruction you cause without a second thought
There was actually a discussion on the game's steam page where devs talkes about this in detail and provided inspirations, it was pretty interesting

Yeah and when it's done right it's basically the best medium for doing so. Even in a linear game where the player's choices don't change the story at all, the gameplay still enhances the story aspects (assuming both are good, at least). Like, it's one thing for characters to say that an antagonist is powerful and deadly, and then show the protagonist having a life or death battle with them. It's another thing to fight that antagonist yourself, get game over'd a bunch of times by him, and finally win with the force of your own skill and perseverance. Generally the latter is just going to have more impact by default.

Games are toys. Their modularity and player agency erase any potential for higher narrative the author may intend.
Books, movies, anime, put the narrative solely in the creators hands. Every story beat and action has deliberate intent. When you let the player intrude upon the plot you get shit like Niko mowing down dozens of civilians but agonizing over every single kill in the missions.

Something like Undertale is more fitting, but it still fails by rewarding the player with the 'secret' bossfight at the end of it. To truly have it have real meaning, it would need to be slaughter for the sake of slaughter with no particular reward. Just experiencing it just because you can.

Wrong. Death of the author.
Just because an author is trying to tell a certain story does not necessarily mean they will succeed.

there's almost nothing a story can do nowadays to surprise, we've seen everything in terms of concept, creativity, subverting expectations, so in their attempt to engage the player, or spectator, games and shows appeal to emotion, guilt trip you, or appeal to politics.
Personally, I think this is an invitation to consumers to reflect on what they truly enjoy, sometimes a predictable, but well told story is preferable, or in the case of games, no story at all may also be enjoyable, a return to form if you will, to the times when you could press start and play a game without care for the context, like doom

If the game was so committed to telling that story to the point of not giving you any choice, why make the morality of it a big deal?

All of the comments the game makes are directly about walker, the meta commentary is about how it can apply to the player and military shooters in general, and I really don't see the point in getting offended by it. I very much don't see the point in asking for a choice for the story to be an entirely different one. Would a boring 10 second ending of them turning around and walking off really make the game that much more engaging?

And to get back on track, the story has already been told even if you never read, listen, watch or play the content.
Even further back on track, when you read a book, you're not the characters even though you need to turn the page. You're not Walker even if he won't move without your input. Video game characters more often than not make decisions without your input since no game could ever account for every possible action a player takes, you're just along for the fun bits.

The game also opens with, "with special guest starring (you) the player." The game openly acknowledges it's being played and will often make little shots at you during loading screens. Much of Konrads later dialogue isn't just focused on Walker but also the player. Even Walkers own dialogue as well. When his subordinate protests saying there has to be a different way past the fortified position without using the WP mortar, he says there isn't. That's also to the player who would be considering a different option as well. It can't happen though, because the plot NEEDS it to happen, otherwise everything that happens afterwards wouldn't make sense.

The part where the game is a subversion, so gives you false choices throughout the playthrough. It sets up the idea that you could potentially make a different choice, only to pull the rug out from under you each time it does. You can't save the CIA agent the 33rd capture, it doesn't matter if you kill the water thief or the soldier, and you can't not use the mortar on the civvies. Paradoxically the only 2 choices that matter are if you decide to gun down the mob that hung Lugo or if you chose to have Walker shoot himself or not.

the problem with videogames replacing movies/series is literally how creepy are videogame cliches breaking the 4th wall inside of a interactive movie/serie

The Last of Us. Collecting trash for upgrade weapons in the workbench.
God of War. Walking five minutes meanwhile other people talk.
Metal Gear and Death Stranding. Everything.
Other Games. squeeze-through-a gap fake loading screens.

Not really. Unless you take control away from the player and make them basically watch a movie with little interaction it's really the player's inclination to do silly things that's going to mess up the whole artistic message the developers are trying to send. Early game developers understood this and even in "serious" stories they'd put tongue in cheek humor and stuff, but it was in the 00s did they think they needed to elevate things as an artform and they never got the hint that your average player really hates serious artistic messaging.
