If nearly this exact game came out in 1998 or 1999 as SM64 2, where would it rank in the 3D Mario lineup?

9/10, best mario game, 10/10 if you remove the music world

It would rank as boring kaizoslop because of the unforgiving trial and error nature of the game. It

Did you play a different hack than me? I don't remember Star Road as kaizoish

i'm gonna try playing this today. how does it compare to b3133?

not him but tbf star road does have some bullshit sections but it's mostly related to the camera/geometry/music level and not most of the actual level design

Completely different ideas. Star Road and most other SM64 hacks focus entirely on gameplay/level design whereas B3313 doesn't really care about gameplay and is entirely about exploration (I love both though don't get me wrong)

See that's the fun part. the game has some easy stars, some brutal ones, and some very cryptic ones, so when you're playing for the first time, you just want to get to the end, you end up going from world to world trying to get whatever you can get to unlock the next part of the castle, sometimes retrying stars you've given up before, and feeling super satisfied when you can get a new one. Just like how you first played sm64 for the first time. I'm not some pro sm64 player, now when I replay that, I'm good enough to just go for 100% linearly, star road is hard enough to make me get that feeling.

it would get very bad reviews because the SM64 camera just isn't up to the task of the difficulty of this game.

I remember most of my difficulty being from enemies pestering you in the later levels
but I'm sure it wouldn't be that bad now that I've played so many other hacks

Speaking of....which version is the right one? There's like 5 of them and I have no idea which one is the original

i got the Unabandoned A2 Anniversary Edition
version because it apparently has the most fixes to it like resetting you at the start of an area when you get cooked.

Alright I'll see that version then , hope that there isn't some discord tomfuckery involved

idk what that means but there was some drama with the original dev. basically people kept bitching he wasn't finishing the game quickly enough and just quit so another group took over.

Among the general public/gaming media it would probably be seen as better than SM64 on its launch, and definitely better than Sunshine
Although later on I think it would take a bit of an SMB2J/DK64 type reputation and people would turn against it
Galaxy and Galaxy 2 would obviously be considered better if you remember how much journalists sucked off those games

the last secret level isn't even kaizo it's supposed to be about the level of the other mario secret levels (champion's road etc) and it is about that hard. Music level is far more bullshit
