You're gonna need a smartphone to live in the modern world so buy a cheap one for text messages at least.
As for gaming, get a modded Switch or a Deck. Chinkhelds are not worth it in the long run.

I own one and really enjoy it, nice to have a handheld that can play a lot of games without being a fucking massive fisher price tablet like the deck

Buy a r35 for cheap on AliExpress. If you search the /g/ archive you will find which stores sell the legit ones. If you play it a lot and you feel like you want to emulate more modern games, spend the money on more expensive options. You can play ps1 titles on the r35w, you can even play a few psp and dreamcast games.
