Aside from it being an underpowered piece of shit with a tablet gimmick, Nintendo overestimated their branding and thought parents who don't give a shit about vidya would understand that putting a U after Wii means its a whole new console and not some dumb upgrade. They had to make a whole commercial to teach kids how to explain this to their dumbfuck parents.

Its a wii... again... but everyone had a wii. And the gimmick, is dumb
They wanted to repeat the wiis success -- where they repackaged the gc as a new console with a silly gimmick and made a billion dollars
But few had a gc, and the wiis gimmick legitimately looked revolutionary at the time, there was massive hype
The wii u looked like a peripheral. The console looked the same. No one ever named a successor console like that. And the ads were baaaad

The console hardware sold for a profit and the average attachment rate per console was 14 games to say that it almost bankrupted the company is cooked up nonsense. It certainly failed to meet expectations due to the poor release strategy leaving the first 6 months for 3rd parties was a massive mistake that the console never recovered from.

It was essentially a "pro" console before those were a thing. The problem is that it came out too close to 8th gen so people who could have been interested in a Wii U decided to wait for the PS4 or Xbone instead. Had it released in 2009 it would have done WAY better.
