The more your RTS physically requires of the player, the worse your RTS is.
Every time the UI makes doing something more complicated than it needs to be, the worse your RTS is.
Every time you build in a mechanic that could be automated but requires player attention because you are worried about skill expression or some other dumb buzzword, the worse your RTS is.

It's simple, really. Make a strategy game, not ungaclick. Pic unrelated.

This but unironically. Factorio annihilates the dumb "macro" of Starcraft because it is automated and far more expansive. World in Conflict, Company of Heroes and Men of War have funner armies to control because they have built in ways to spread out units, get them to face where you want, can drive in reverse, etc. Archaic Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty clones deserve to be dead and irrelevant, they were never good games.

Honestly, Factorio is better if you want to build a base, and Warcraft 3 is better if you want army fights. Starcraft has been shit for decades.
