FF7 was an Attractor Point in jRPG history. At this point jRPGs had two timelines they could've gone down. For your consideration: there exists a worldline where FF7 flopped for being too divergent from other popular jRPG titles. Instead of pursuing the modern-ish 'urban fantasy' Final Fantasy could've stayed a game about armored knights and magic crystals and airships and sometimes spaceships. But, we're on the worldline where FF7 succeeded, and as a consequence jRPGs (not just Final Fantasy) increasingly pursue a modernized 'urban fantasy' vibe where everyone is wearing streetclothes instead of armor. Or, like, everyone has cell-phones in the fantasy world because in reality everyone has cell-phones.
