It's aimed at 12 year olds instead of 8 year olds so its slightly less kiddy. Amounts of Japanese humour will depend on the series.
Check out the original or Stronger for the classic era goofyness or Kuuga or Gaim for the modern era more serious style.

Gaim is the closest a main series will get, but the standalone movie spinoff The First is probably your best bet. The First is pretty good and you can go into it blind but it's not very representative of what you'll get out of the series in tone otherwise. And whatever you do, don't watch The Next, it's a dumpster fire.
Also don't watch the recent Shin Kamen Rider either, it's a movie specifically made for the fans, you won't appreciate it if you aren't already familiar with the series, never mind its own issues.

Not really. There's often a moroes undertone, most of the early series are a case of the MC being captured and turned into a monster against his will and it's sometimes reflected on by the narrator reflecting on how everyone has someone to look out for them, except Kamen Rider or the MC shattering a glass with his hands, but it's thin references to the manga, which IS darker. The series will happily have that prior stuff or people being murdered left right and center but juxtaposed next to a guy wandering around in skintight pants, a giant wrestler belt and an armadillo costume trying to bring Japan to it's knees by blowing up fuel tanks. V3 starts with the MC's entire family being killed on screen.

KR Stronger subverts this by having the MC trick the badguys into remodeling him and is an absolute fucking chad playing the hero to the max, but also has one of the more poignant deaths.

No it's not. Rider is more about a solo person granted powers, typically the same as their opponents, to fight against a bigger organization or threat who may make friends along the way. Occasionally there's a small group of people with powers like Ryuki, Gaim, or Geats but that's not typical.
Sentai is more about a group of people with powers fighting an evil group to save the world with mech fights in between.

You're right that Sentai is aiming for a younger demographic which is why Rider does some more serious introspection or themes, but both are still meant for like 8-13 year olds. Sentai tends to be more lighthearted as a whole while Rider tends to be more of a balancing act between lightheartedness and seriousness.

Kuuga is probably the darkest series if we're keeping it mainline. It was basically a 90s cop show that features a superhero in it, and a lot of on screen deaths.

The Nanosuit was conforming to dudes that were practically on roids with distended guts. It looked terrible then and it looks terrible now. Crysis 1 nanosuits will always remain the best. The only issue with them was the lack of pronounced delts.

I don't mind the design, but surely this isn't the actual suit they're going to use? Having the "muscles" shift around as they're just part of the bodysuit's fabric looks terrible, why isn't it separate parts like the old suits?

Watch Garo. It's made for older audiences with a mid-2000s horror vibe and the first season and first movie are both fantastic. After that the quality goes all over the place, but the first anime is also really good.

The original creator of the franchise wanted to make a hero called Skullman but the studio didn't allow him to because they felt the design wouldn't resonate with kids. So he decided to ask his kid son for help since he felt he needed the perspective of a child and his kid made a grasshopper man and that's the design that got greenlit. Since that's the first design it's considered iconic and gets referenced a lot.

I don't know anon, as far as googling gets me, Kobayashi was only involved with Makai Senki (season 2) and Honoo no Kokuin (the first anime). Makai Senki was awful but Honoo no Kokuin was fantastic so I'm surprised they have the same writer behind them.
Anyway you just go in production order. Beast of the Holy Night was really good, Red Requiem was completely forgettable, Makai Senki sucked, and then Soukoku no Maryu was visually impressive if nothing else. After that they leave Kouga as t he protag behind and focus on a new cast with Yami o Terasu Mono but that's where I lost interest and stopped watching.
Incidentally Honoo no Kokuin is great and my favourite thing to come from the franchise, but the movie isn't worth watching, it adds nothing and just milks it with an extension*. The second and third anime productions weren't good either.

*Totally different show but Infini-T Force was the same actually, really good TV series that had a movie that was a complete waste of time.

It was always £5 in the bargain bin at game from the moment it came out, but it's a large scale map pvp shooter with npc's fighting for objectives, with vehicles and load out variety. It's like the blue print for a lot of modern shooters. I liked it but never loved it because it gave me a strange liminal feeling but I'd still rate it very highly. I think if they updated it in unreal and dropped it for free on steam it would do amazingly

It has really good choreography with some cool experimental camera angles and interesting use of cramped and other unconventional spaces for the fight scenes.
The underlying themes are great but I found the writing was really held back by the whole snack theming.
It's hard to take anything seriously when the MC is prepping the cum cannon sword, or the retarded minions are on screen.
