When did Pokemon start going bad? When they started focusing more on characters than gameplay?

When they started to cut corners instead of go the extra mile. Which would mean ORAS.
>No Battle Frontier
>SM is very handhold-y
>SwSh has dexit and low graphics fidelity, plus half-baked raids, annoying characters, and a stupid plot
>SV has good characters and an interesting plot, but ran like shit and also looks like shit
Like at one point they made a ton of 3D models with a stupid high polygon count, designed to last decades. And come SV they scrapped them all and just made new ones. Take some extra time to polish the damn game.
It was never a good RPG, mechanically it's just not very good, there's 4 moves and all the non-damage moves are bad
It was strongest second-gen when all the Pokemon designs weren't cringe
It was popular primarily among children due to the social aspect, periphery media (anime, cards, toys, etc.) and Pokemon designs.

X and Y was when the rot set in, it was completely unsalvageable by Sword and Shield.

they tried to reinvent the combat wheel but I think a more traditional rpg approach to mechanics would've worked better.

XY was the start of the generational gimmicks and the end of decent endgame content

The exact position not it started going bad was the transition to 3D. X and Y was utterly lazy compared to Gen V
>68 new PokΓ©mon when previous gen had 150
>no post game when the B2W2 let you battle every gym leader from every game and catch lots of legendaries
>gym leaders only had 3 PokΓ©mon each
>no third version
>rivals were even bigger chumps
Serena was however the best designed Pokegirl yet. Gen 8 is around when even the character designs went to shit aland they started overdesigning everything

I'm not baffled by the fact that Pokemon is trash now, I'm baffled that the worse it gets, the more it sells. SwSh and SV each sold just shy of 30 million copies. My only explanation is that kids that played GSC and RBE are now parents and are automatically buying pokemon games for their kids

X and Y, when EXP ALL became the default. A smart trainer would have to grind up his backline mons to have a well balanced team, but it became braindead after that
