people get their social interaction from other online spaces such as discord/twitter/posts on reddit/etc so when people play games (with randoms) it's almost purely because they just want to play and nothing else

Besides that, there's also the ease of finding information by yourself now. Global/region/guild chat in older mmo's used to be an almost constant scroll of questions relating to the game, but now everyone knows how to easily obtain that information themselves through wiki's or youtube guides.

Things work in different order. You used to play games to find people, now you socialize first and then play together.

It's because modern games and the people who play them are too obsessed with farming the feel good chemicals.
In old Maplestory, the grind was so slow that you would not mind spending some time just chatting, and the game also had plenty of mechanics that incentivized you to do so, like having to spend real time just sitting around in an airship to move between places or having to wait for some sections in party quests.
Now everything is made so line goes up nonstop, you need to do all your dailies and weeklies, party quests are all focused on killing things and bosses with barely any pause, etc. You have no reason to chat and stopping to do so is a significant loss in progression so nobody does it anymore.

I think a big reason for this I don't usually see people bring up is the fact MMOs are so grindy. When you're doing the same dungeon over and over, dozens of times a day, several days a week, you're going to start to tune out.

When I play a multiplayer game it's usually after a 8-10 hour shift of my job which is usually extremely stressful and hard work. It's the downtime, and the continuity. Everything's optimized to give you nonstop action. It used to be that games had rough edges. You'd have to manually find groups to do dungeons. You had to walk or hitch a ride to where people were getting shot.

You'd wait 15 seconds to respawn, during which you might say something. But here's the crazy part, they'd be people who didn't just forcibly vanish once the round ended, so you would be subjected to simple tit for tat in social interactions. If you'd be a raging autist in the chat, eventually people would learn to avoid interacting with you. Rub elbows with the same people enough times and you eventually find friends that will last you years.

But anyway that ain't profitable so we just don't do it anymore.

Matchmaking itself isn't inherently a problem, it's that modern matchmaking systems are often designed to 'increase engagement' and part of that is throwing every player back to the menu at the end of every match so the matchmaking system can better manipulate a user's experience with the game. Back in the day matchmade lobbies didn't end with each match, any players who didn't manually exit the lobby would be kept together and the matchmaker dropped players in to fill any gaps. It's been horrendously bad since 1, 4 luckily has a dedicated amount of community servers unlike 1, 5 and 2042.

CoD literally runs everything on the same engine now, when in the past Sledgehammer games used their own heavily changed IW engine, with Treyarch doing the same depending on the tech needed. Cheaters now just have to figure out one game and they'll have a great foundation for the next 3-4 titles.
