Something about mass market success always coming on the heels of a niche hit. What enables it to go mass market is the streamlining process it goes through to become palatable for as many people as possible. Because it is the breakout success that is by definition the entry point for the majority of the audience who are ignorant of what came before, they cheer while the homogenisation process they are cheering on continues. Eventually the games are so shit they complain and sound exactly like the people they called cynical boomers for hating on their own entry point.
I remember begging my friend group to stop playing cod and join me on bad company 2, they never do. Then BF3 comes out and I'm begging them to stop playing that shitty game.
