Any console is better than the ps1. Every game on this thing aged like milk except sotn and even that game isn't worth playing anymore.

Yeah, but the grey is kinda ugly.
Wish they had made color variations like Nintendo did with the 64.

PS1 and PS2 are close but ultimately the change to 3d was a bigger upgrade than going higher poly.

There was nothing quite like having your friend come over for the weekend, getting some sodas and chips lined up, and playing Tekken, Gran Turismo, Unholy War, Armored Core... and taking turns with the single player games like Soul Reaver and Final Fantasy all weekend. One of a kind experience.

i'd love a PS1 solution that didn't involve optical media.

The only thing stopping me from picking one up is that ODEs are expensive and have sketchy compatibility. Like for any other console original hardware beats emulating but for the PS1 it's the opposite

for people with taste the n64 was a zeld mario AND rareware console. Nintendos betrayl of rare was part of the reason the console flopped so hard

No shit, but I don't want to. I don't want to open an emulator on my PC, i want to plug a PS1 controller into a box next to my old TV and my other retro consoles and play it that way

not even nearly the same

There's that PS1-like FPGA thingy that was shilled here a while back. Superstation or something. I think it's a waste of money but I guess it might be helpful in your case.
Why do you hate optical media, anyway? As long as your console is modchipped you can burn as many cheap discs as you want and play them.
Anonymous No.717752583 >>717756049
maybe if it was less than a third of the price, maybe
>Why do you hate optical media, anyway?
optical media bad. the drives have a limitef lifespan, discs suck and take up space and burning and labelling takes time and is nowhere near as elegant as a game select interface

I guess another route is to get a fat PS2/PS3 and mod it to load games off a hard drive. Not sure how expensive that would be where you live. Maybe jailbreak a more modern console and emulate through there? PSIO, if you can solder?
Honestly, just embrace the optical disc with all its flaws. It was part of the original experience, after all.

Neither are really great solutions. You can't use the PS1's hardware built into the PS2 to run games off a HDD, it only works with discs. POPstarter is how you run games of a HDD, but that's a largely incompatible software emulator that sony designed for one game

As for a PS3 it's plugged into an HDTV, the controller has triggers instead of buttons, the frontend is too new to suit PS1 games. it's just wrong, at that point i'd emulate on a pc
