childhood is thinking gondor is the the best. adulthood is realizing rohan was the chad all along
the book had the tiny side story with elfwine or whatever going around saving people and beating back orcs. those middlemen really put gondor to shame
ThΓ©oden and his dilemma with riding to gondors aide is one of my favorite parts of the book. leaving too early with too few riders vs leaving too late to save minas tirith. and then he finds the messenger from minas tirith dead on the road and realizes that they never received word that rohan would honor their alliance and ride to their aide... ;_:
i imagine that first gondor soldier waiting for the city to fall and get gang raped to death, hearing orc and evil men blow their horns all through the day but then one morning he realizes one horn blast sounds a little different and stands up to look over the wall and sees the assembled rohirim with their flags blowing and swords raised to the air charging to death and ruin...
Arise now, arise, Riders of ThΓ©oden!
Dire deeds awake: dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!
Arise, arise, Riders of ThΓ©oden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor
