Neither. Both Gondor and Rohan represent strands of English culture and cannot be accurately mapped onto the non-English. It's the equivalent of blacks thinking tanned anime characters are representative of them.

Gondor because I like infantry more than cavalry normally. Too bad they're always modeled after the movies. I know why Jackson did it the way he did, and they look fine for a movie, but the chainmail/nasal helm/long shield aesthetic like in OP is absolute peak and I want to see more of it.

Chainmail doesn't stop the blunt impact of a mace (or any weapon) no matter what material it is made from. I would favor a steel plate armor over a mithril chainmail any day because of that.
Oh, and about that scene where frodo's mithril chainmail saved him from being impaled by that troll's spear: realistically that impact should still have turned his insides into mush.
Which begs the question: Why not wear plate made from mithril?

childhood is thinking gondor is the the best. adulthood is realizing rohan was the chad all along

the book had the tiny side story with elfwine or whatever going around saving people and beating back orcs. those middlemen really put gondor to shame

ThΓ©oden and his dilemma with riding to gondors aide is one of my favorite parts of the book. leaving too early with too few riders vs leaving too late to save minas tirith. and then he finds the messenger from minas tirith dead on the road and realizes that they never received word that rohan would honor their alliance and ride to their aide... ;_:

i imagine that first gondor soldier waiting for the city to fall and get gang raped to death, hearing orc and evil men blow their horns all through the day but then one morning he realizes one horn blast sounds a little different and stands up to look over the wall and sees the assembled rohirim with their flags blowing and swords raised to the air charging to death and ruin...

Arise now, arise, Riders of ThΓ©oden!
Dire deeds awake: dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!

Arise, arise, Riders of ThΓ©oden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor

After the sack of Fornost, even with the following victory by the gondorian king, Arnor collapsed. Split into 3 successor states, Cardolan Arthedain and Rhudaur iirc
Cardolan got plagued
Arthedain got plagued and war'd
Rhudaur ended up getting corrupted

>The Shire-folk survived, though war swept over them and most of them fled into hiding. To the help of the king they sent some archers who never returned; and others went also to the battle in which Angmar was overthrown (of which more is said in the annals of the South). Afterwards in the peace that followed the Shire-folk ruled themselves and prospered. They chose a Thain to take the place of the King, and were content; though for a long time many still looked for the return of the King. But at last that hope was forgotten, and remained only in the saying When the King comes back, used of some good that could not be achieved, or of some evil that could not be amended. The first Shire-thain was one Bucca of the Marish, from whom the Oldbucks claimed descent. He became Thain in 379 of our reckoning (1979).
