Can we talk a little bit about this game? I'm barely on the fourth layer (Canyon Layer) and I can't believe what they've done again. The game screams Odyssey but Odyssey on steroids and with fucking Kong. It's so much fun that I could stay on the same layer forever, I always find something I haven't explored yet. And the environment destruction mechanic that I thought I'd soon get tired of, keeps getting better and better. One of the most creative games I've ever played in my life.

And why is it always Nintendo that's able to do something like this? Do they really have all the most creative and capable devs working for them? Fucking mindblowing.

Nintendo fosters their development talent and does their best to pass senior knowledge down to new developers and then keep them working for them by actually having good work polices, Nintendo is constantly listed as one of the best companies to work for in Japan
They are historically a toy company, and they still treat games like toys, instead of using their new hardware to render skin pores on some ugly bitch in 4k they think of new gameplay ideas they couldn't do before, like being able to dynamically smash the entire level and then they take that idea and make it fun mechanically and build the game around it
Remember miyamoto spent ages doing nothing but chasing a rabbit in an unfinished test level in mario 64 until he thought mario's controls felt perfect, that kind of design has permeated the company and all their best first party games tend to follow that type of design philosophy

the core movement is crazy

I didn't like odyssey that much but I thought mario's movements were fantastic and probably the best in any 3D game I've played but bananza completely blows it out of the water, the amount of moves you can string together is batshit insane

like recently I've learned that if you time a jump properly after tearing off a chunk of terrain you can conserve the initial jump which means that you can effectively triple jump, and then you can mix that with all sorts of other tech to pull off crazy parkour stunts

imagine calling this game bad

Simplicity generally lets devs focus on making a game fun.

Nintendo don't try to make games like wannabe Hollywood Directors. They make a very simple 3D engine, playtest the shit out of it and keep adding in the enjoyable things/take out the ones that aren't for half the development until they're happy they have a good core game then Paint over it with one of their IP's to make it marketable, then spend another half of development time doing the same thing, and polishing the shit out of it, adding a simple but ingorable plot and catchy music along the way.

Like their business practices or not, they know how to make good games. That's what keeps them afloat.

It's good but I am getting tired of piecemeal open world where monotony and going through the motions sets in at times. Bigger scale linear levels with focus are still the best.

Mind you this is still better than most games

>>And why is it always Nintendo that's able to do something like this? Do they really have all the most creative and capable devs working for them?
first of all yes, because they recruit the absolute best students from the top japanese universities instead of some cunt with a phd in lesbian historiography like western studios do, but also they have something most devs today completely lack, which is a stable workforce

this ensures that oldheads who worked on all the hits that defined nintendo decades ago rise up the corporate ranks and mentor the younger generation, there's transmission of skills and knowledge

this is why all the faggots crying about nintendo having lost their way are so full of shit, they haven't changed their fundamental gamedesign philosophies since the 80s and that's why they're still successful

It's typical for Japs to stay in the same job their entire lives and master it to perfection during that time. This is very evident at Nintendo.

Here they always say buy a Japanese car made in Japan. The best quality you can get.

one of my favorite aspects is how you can avoid bonking when you do a roll into a wall either with punch or grab

I fucking HATED bonking in odyssey, I wished they added a way to time a button press to cancel it because it added to the stop and go pacing of mario's movement and bananza fixes that
