I'm replaying this game for the first time in 6 years. How does /v/ like Dragon Quest XI?

I had a total blast the first time I played. Nearly 100%ed, but never got around to the last superboss. I've decided to do even better this time, and also do Draconian Quest.

I've never played it and Veronica is amazing, imagine how good the game must be if you actually play it.

It's one of the weaker DQ games.
I played the japanese version, and the first localized version. Haven't played the 3DS version but I want to at some point since that's apparently the best version.

I really loved it when I played it and I have fond memories of going through it, but when compared to other games, I feel like it is simply okay. I'm not a particular fan that so many people praise it as much as they do, but I think it's a situation where people love it so much because it's their first. Having a ton of call backs to music from other games is great, but 11's original music is extremely disappointing since there are hardly any tracks. The silent protagonist schtick just doesn't work here. Not having a cinematic battle camera where party members are moving around like in 9 was extremely disappointing. Walking around in battles is so stupidly useless that I really don't understand why it was included at all. I also really hate when stories don't commit to character deaths. That's literally the only aspect of act 3 that I didn't like. I wish there was more of an explanation to Calasmos. Like many other final bosses in this series, he's a nothing villain that hardly has anything to do with anything until he just shows up. I mean I get that he was the catalyst for everything, but I don't really feel like he was there for any part of the game. I also EXTREMELY hate that this wasn't some sort of true origin story. I'd rather have played as Erdwin and go through his story than the Luminary. Final couple of cutscenes were fun though and I really didn't expect them to connect it to 3, although the sword of light should have been the biggest indicator that they would.

I liked it until act 3 which is an all time blunder, but I plan to replay it and simply stop at the end of act 2 and let that be my definitive experience with the game.

Seen this sentiment a few times, on /v/ specifically, but there is never a followup explanation. What is it about act 3 that makes it so bad ?

For the record, I don't agree, but I am curious to hear a different perspective.

It takes away all the gravity from act II. Turning a colder, bittersweet ending into an everything goes perfectly happy ending.
I don't hate it myself aside from not getting a cured Veronica.

Act 3 isn't perfectly done or even particularly well done, but there was never a point in time where the Christlike hero of DQ wasn't going to undo all the trauma and defeat the icon of all that is evil

If you hate 11 and think 5 looks like shit, the series probably isn't for you.
4 is peak, you'd think it looks like shit
3 is fantastic, you'd think it's mid and looks like shit
8 is fun, but the 3ds version looks and sounds like shit, ps2 version is a bit slow and the stakes are kinda eh
9 is kino but I'm not convinced you'd like it

Yeah 4 looks like that version of 5.
If you hate 11 I'd recommend trying 9
That said 3,4,5,9,11 are my personal great. I'd stay clear of 2,6, and 7.

DQ8 is overrated as shit, that game came out years after FFX and it did NOTHING for the genre, it's it bad but IX and XI are miles better, plus, what the fuck was that secret dungeon?

I've come to resent it. Realizing it has no identity and is incredibly linear compared to the rest of the series. Very unfortunate. Act 3 is terrible and has made me stop playing immediately after Chapter 2 during replays.

I played with all the draconian quests ON recently, but I don't recommend it. For the best experience, just use:
>strong monsters
>no EXP from weak monsters

And that's it. Then you avoid using seeds because they break the game.
If you want extra challenge, stay at a low level.
