Zack, just like a lot of people, Cloud and Barret included, genuinely believed Shinra was a force for good initially. He signed on for a war against Wutai believing Wutai were the bad guys for denying their people the benefits of the Reactors. When the reality is that Wutai knows what comes attached to the Reactors. I mean what were Zack's heroics anyway? Crushing Wutai? Protecting Hojo? Failing to save Angeal? His boss funded Hollander's research. I guess he stopped Genesis. Not like that mattered, Minerva was never going to accept him anyway. Every mission Zack has ever partook in was a cover for the horrific evil that is Shinra. By the time he was mentoring Cloud, his words of comfort were that it's a good thing Cloud washed out because SOLDIER is a den of vipers.

For as heroic of a person Zack was, he was always attached to evil because he believed in the people around it. Zack died accomplishing nothing. Which ironically gives him something in common with Cloud. Cloud idealized Zack as a hero not realizing Zack had similar struggles to him. With the difference being Cloud was actually able to change shit. Zack WOULD be able to rest in peace knowing Cloud fulfilled his dream of SE would stop digging up his corpse for marketing.

To be clear, I don't think Crisis Core is all that good. It's the definition of a mediocre game. But I do like Zack and good guy Sephiroth. For its goals, I think it did okay. Most of my problems with Zack nowadays comes from SE constantly dragging him back up after his story ended. And trying to brute force a tragic end into a happy one. I'll readily admit that teenage me shed a tear watching the memories of Zack's friends fade away one by one in the DMW as his death approaches. But as an adult I don't think that one good thing is worth the garishness of all of that. But even if I'm willing to just accept the CC end for Zack, what Remake is doing actively upsets me.

But the real, true fan. The one with an appetite will say, "I have not had my fill! Give me more filler!!"

It's okay. I like to see more of the world, it gives me a better sense of completion, of being full (as in, the filler fills me until full)

Then I can just enjoy. I can go play the entire compendium of FF7, and then get an understanding. Then, I can return to the original and say "WOW!! Ther is so much for this world to offer :)"

Dead characters can show up during epic moments to fight in battles and talk to the other characters. But not like when it happens in MCU movies, no, it's something clever that you need to study theology to understand.

Unfortunately the "Zack is just a regular guy" narrative doesn't really hold water when you take into account that all members of SOLDIER, even the 3rd Class ones are mutants that have been modified at a genetic level to excel at their jobs.
You could always chalk Zack jobbing to a trio of Shin-Ra security troops as him suffering from Mako poisoning but that's never stated in the actual game or any of the follow-ups, which opted going down the route of showing people why being SOLDIER 1st Class is such a big deal to begin with.
Despite my love of the original game it still has plenty of flaws and unfortunately every effort the compilation and remake entries have made to try and address them are accompanied by a whole host of other issues.

You're overselling how OG and even Crisis Core depicts SOLDIER. Sephiroth is the pinnacle of SOLDIER. There's no human in the world stronger than him. But Sephiroth can be ambushed. He fails, he overlooks things, Zack himself is uniquely strong but he gets bopped by Sephiroth with no effort. Zack is enhanced but he's still human. Just like Usain Bolt is the fastest human in the world but he's not a mutant
