Modern games tie victory to either in-game progress or rank system.
World of Tanks is 15v15 and it is just as infuriating to play as any other "competitive" game, but at the very least you do feel more free in where you can go and do not have a definitive designated role that you MUST fulfil like in 5v5 games.
Best games from a mental perspective are the ones you jump in, play for how much you want and drop out.
Valve games with their 24-32 player servers, old Battlefields, Warband, and so on.

Small team means that the impact of the weakest link is greater than if you had a bigger team. In Team Fortress 2 if you die it's not a big deal because you still have 11 guys fighting in your place. In Overwatch if you die then your team has lost 20% of its fighting power and is about to get steamrolled.

I stopped playing WoT because how no fun it is on higher tiers and players being obsessed with stats than game itself
I had most time when I played on tier 3 tanks

small teams == small maps
small maps mean every target is funneled into the same corridors and easily seen and addressed, primarily to account for how gamepad control is garbage, so targets need to always be near where the stick can quickly move

with large maps/teams, (you) can jump in, come from an unexpected angle, gib a bunch of other players, change the course of the match, and with kb+m controls actually keep track of where you are and where everyone else is.

I usually stuck it out to tier 7/8.
Losing makes you feel like shit and snowballing happens way too often.

In that sense WT arcade feels less stressful, but there I only play up to tier 3 planes.

smaller teams also mean (you) will be targeted by both your team and the opposing team, meaning you're under pressure from both sides to perform. mistakes are quickly noticed and punished.

Games designed for 4-6 vs 4-6 are designed for esports becaue esports teams don't want to make big teams and therefore misery by default.
A 12v12 game, like TF2 for example, is going to have so much going on and is specifically designed to be a fun game. Look at how much they specifically left in TFC like grenades and shit because all the spam wasn't fun or adding depth.

The more player there is, the less matchmaking they need, the less you care about scores.
It also leads to more randomness, diversifying how each game unfold.

Competition & wanting every game to be "e-sport ready" is what kill gaming.
You ain't playing to have fun anymore, you are playing to see who have the biggest dick and to perform in front of a public.

I can still hear the background music

I still remember my reaction when I found out you could deploy cameras that you could view through a command interface that listed all the equipment your team would own

In that moment I had so much hope for how intricate and complex gaming could become, and now almost all all fps games are 10 players max

And you didn't kill yourself seeing what we got instead?
Impressive.

Tribes 2 was actually a downgrade compared to the first game which actually had deployable radar.
That said, the game was originally not built with skiing in mind, skiing was a bug that ascended to the main defining mechanic.

A big difference is that todays everyone play rigid classes that have their unique gimmick.
In Tribes, up to Ascend (and even then they eventually walked back), you could equip pretty much anything on the 3 size of armor, so if you want an invisible heavy, you can, but good luck moving fast enough to not be predictable.

They have an easier time with larger teams since SBMM for all its calculus is basically just trying to make teams as even as possible with a broad sum of perceived player skill. You don't need to put in as much work to get a similar level in teams if the teams are built out of 12 people vs 6 people.

It feels more violent in something like Call of Duty specifically because it has to make those "equal" teams with only 6 people each. So it might just jam one super competent person with a bunch of retards against a bunch of average players.
It's why back during the MWII/III days a lot of people just suggested the only fun game mode was 10vs10, partially because of that but also because IW-designed maps were so fucking huge and had so much dead space that increasing the player count per match was the only way matches would actually end through objective rather than ending because the timer ran out.
