Why did 2000's characters always look so EXTREME?

Did people honestly think it looked good back then?

Peak edge era, Linkin Park, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold were on every radio too.
Emos and other counter cultures like that were everywhere. People thought being mad about life and about the system was cool, that wearing stuff made out of black leather with spikes was cool and all.

My favorite trend is seeing the new guilty gear 'fanbase' bandwagoning on strive calling the old designs shitty and being shocked and appalled when anyone has tits beyond a b-cup

The EXTREME design trend was more of a nineties thing. By the time the 2000s rolled around everyone had already insulated themselves from any criticism by a thick layer of ironic detachment, and would never admit to liking anything edgy or extreme.
