Between CDDA and Project Zomboid, which one do you think is better?
CDDA
>Much better and more varied loot
>Better and more varied zombies. Runners, grabbers, exploders, dogs, juggernauts and many more.
>Mutants, evil fungi and aliens
>Can become mutant or cyborg
>More animals, including dogs and cats that can be tamed
>Zombies are tough and deadly, but they do not kill you instantly in one hit unlike Zomboid.
>Better character crustomisation.
>Medieval autism!!! Wear plate armor. Use medieval weapons like swords and maces. Ride a horse.

Project Zomboid
>Action gameplay!!!
>Faster gameplay.
>Much better immersion and sound design.
>Looks much better. Actual 3D envoirements greatly help the immersion.
>Handmade map instead of generic random generation.
>More intuitive and doesn't require reading 10 guides to learn about arcane things as focus, encumbrance, weariness, etc to play.
>Less menu navigation autism.
>Each item has a beautifully made 3D model.

>>Faster gameplay.
Not really. When you're confident enough in how things will calculate, you can speed through events and sequences faster in Cataclysm than any animations in Zomboid ever could. It's an advantage of not really doing animations at all. Thus Cataclysm can be a lot faster.
>>Much better immersion and sound design.
Sound design? Sure. But the sim-autism in Cataclysm is super immersive.
>>More intuitive and doesn't require reading 10 guides to learn about arcane things as focus, encumbrance, weariness, etc to play.
All you need to do is to read the game's tooltips though. The tooltips are really good.

CDDA and its only little fortnite kids with zero media experience who have allowed the idea that Zomboid is anything but a disastrous YD tier meme to spread. Im not from some discord or reddit, zomboid has always been a complete joke and anyone playing it was basically assuming the Mantle of the Justed and acknowledged that, picrel. CDDA ffs, if you dont like it, good.

Cataclysm takes a lot of reading to be immersed.
You need to read all the zombie and item descriptions so you can imagine the scenario in your head.
Meanwhile, in Somboid you need to just look. This is why I can do 4 days in zomboid for 2 days in CDDA.

Zomboid is one of my favorite games but I just can't get into CDDA tried multiple times, it's a struggle to do much of anything and I visually can't tell what is going on or what i'm looking at.
I've tried all kinds of different start scenarios and I always just basically start it up, try to look around to see what is going on and have zombies teleport on top of me and kill me before I can even figure out where I am or what is around me.
I like complex autistic systems but feel like the overall graphics are just below the threshold of what I can tolerate. Wish there was a UI overhaul or something for it.

The ultimate problem with Cataclysm is all the forks.

We had just CDDA, but Kevin and his friends are retarded narcissistic unlikable pricks, so a few devs left and made Bright Nights. DDA is still the biggest project, so it attracts passionate devs, who then get run out by the trannies running it and splinter off to make their own forks. Now we have CTLG and CLD and CBN and god knows what else. Which one should you play?? Who cares!! It's the classic open source problem.

You should play Bright Nights instead of DDA because it drops a lot of DDA's autistic unfun simulation fetishism

NTA, but it's entirely subjective. CDDA main fork undeniably has the most content but so much of it is questionable factionshit, OC character bullshit, questionably balanced and implemented, autistic nutrient managment, and arbitrary interaction requirements/blocks. It is more but unless you explicitly agree with the vision of the team I wouldn't really call it better than the rest.

The other anon is 100% right though, despite my clear dislike of it I can't really recommend a specific other fork instead because of how fractured the community is now and how much they all step on each others toes.

CDDA has infinite potential and that's what really matters, as of right now CDDA is still better just for the fact that it has a bazillion of things to see and interact with, for the sandbox game that it is that's a good thing, i'd say the challenge is higher in CDDA too thanks to monster evolution and is especially higher if you are playing CTLG, a fork that reduces item spawns of all kinds

>Same with Zomboid, for whatever reason.
At least with zombiod I go into the settings change zombie count to max and then turn off respawns. That way I get a ton of zombies but they don't just appear out of thin air (something I hate). They do still wander from place to place though so you are not totally safe just from clearing an area.
At the beginning you basically focus on immediate survival and work with whatever is around you (in a lot of cases that is the most fun part of the game especially if you don't have the map memorized since you get to explore and look for a good defensible location while trying to survive).
Acquire basic weapons, food/water and shelter to make it through the first night.
From there try to get a car of some sort running since it substantially increases your survivability and mobility.
Then acquire more food, gas, generator, skill magazines to craft and repair stuff.
One you've got a sustainable relatively safe base you can start crafting shit, setting up farms, upgrading your vehicle with pristine parts, getting a box truck and trailer to haul large amounts of shit.
Tear down existing houses, upgrade your base, build walls, set up large water containers, refrigeration, etc.
At this point you're probably a good 40 hours in, then you can focus on grinding your characters stats and combat. Since I have respawn off I typically will try to clear out a town which probably takes like 100 hours or so for the smaller ones.
There are also lot of mods that can add more vehicles, weapons, NPCs (but they are kind of shit) etc.

I also generally will backup my saves even though it is against the spirit of the game, I like the grind but not enough to do it from scratch every time.

ok, and how long have you been in the world?
seen any mutant varients of zombies yet? or just stuff like zombie, tough zombie, etc?

because that is good enough to try for it.
another thing you can do, that takes a bit of time, is to get a knife, preferably a scalpel off of a medical zombie, and dissect everything when you have time
EVERYTHING.
it teaches you anatomy, and then weakspots.
weakspot knowledge, as you learn more about each kind of creature, will let you hit where it hurts consistently, and avoid hitting armored spots much more often
it makes you far more dangerous

Does dissecting help you fight all monsters in a group or only one monster?
Will dissecting oversized wasps help you with giant wasps or dissecting tough zombies help with hulks? Otherwise, dissecting most enemies I can currently kill without risking my life seems pointless.

further more, if you fail to dodge something you can still succeed to block it.
its layers of defense as you get better.

oh, and the dissection thing.
it takes a while so you need to be in a safe spot and be ready to wait.
if you don't have a scalpel I think a butchers knife is the next best thing, but I could be wrong.

>>717773550
it depends.
different monsters give progress towards different "sets" of knowledge.
but oversized wasps and regular wasps would be the same thing.
think of it as a tech tree that goes into branches.
if you are at the bottom and dissecting stuff from something specialized, it starts you with learning the trunk, the foundation.
you will be able to see what stuff you are learning and what it may lead to.
it will help, but more specialized enemies have additional things that require additional knowledge from dissecting them specifically.
going after guys with kevlar is universal knowledge for dealing with armored clothing, I believe.
there is another one for natural armor

Dodge is unreliable but as long as you don't get hit too much it will let you avoid most attacks, its extremely hard to find armor that will let you tank basic monsters hits completely in the beginning of the game, you will at best find armor that is decent but you will still take some damage and you will take it more often since your dodge stat is lower, keeping speed/stamina/dodge high are essential to avoid surprises.

as you progress with dissection, you start with going after everything you can safely kill.
regular zombies and kids are preferred, maybe a dog here and there, etc.
regular zombies are the first to become worthless to dissect, and at THAT point you can start going for specialized knowledge on the side, instead of spending a few days going through EVERYTHING you kill.

Is there any reason to wear boots? You wild think that in the apocolypse boots would be the best footwera, but they slow you down which is deadly in this game and I think I got only hit in the legs once or twice and the boots do not even have 100% coverage. Sneakers seem like the best choice prior to armor which is really odd.

To fight zombies you need:
Low encumbrance. Unless you have armor, encumbrance is deadly.
No pain. Pain is deadly.
Fresh transition. Once you get to weary, attacks will take 400% as many turns which will obviously kill you.

Good beginner weapons include the quarterstaff, cudgel or wooden spear. The spear can hit from 2 tiles away.

After that, try kiting zombies by getting 2 tiles away, waiting for them to approach, attacking with a fast weapon and getting away again until they die. Anything non-zombie is very deadly unless small harmless animals like geese.

Also to learn skills effectively you will neede high focus. Focus will drain as you level your skills and slowly move towards your morale.

As a beginner, avoid cities and towns like the plague and only loot rural locations. After doing the practice recipees from the crafting menu and crafting a solid beginner weapon, you should be able to handle single zombies and clear out minor areas like light industry, farms (unless there are zombie cows which are deadly) and shacks and sewage treatment plants by pulling single zombies and 1v1ing them but do not overdo it and watch your stamina, pain and transition.

You can turn normal water into clean water by boiling it over a fire in a fireproof container. It will take longer to boil the more water there is. Start a fire in a fireplace or brazier with a flint and steel or match and paper. If you start a fire outside of a fireplace or brazier, it will kill you. I think only wood or gasoline can fuel fire. I tried to fuel a fire with corpses and it did not work.

Early food can just be looted from pre-apocolypse areas like cars, orchards and houses. BVasements provide basic refridgeration.

For an easy start, pick a hunting lodge as a default location, as those have beds, fireplaces, water barrels, bath tubs for storing waret and a basement for storing food.

don't get too attached to your first dozen or so characters, in fact feel free to play like a suicidal retard at first just to test what you can/can't realistically survive and try some of the wackier traits
early game priorities are weapons, tools, clothes esp. a decent backpack, transportation (bikes are often in workable shape, running cars are rare but not impossible to find) and books roughly in that order, with a goal of establishing a base outside of the city ASAP so you can build up your skills and gear in relative safety. Food is everywhere in the early game so don't load yourself up on it. Also be prepared to ditch items before a fight if you can't otherwise avoid it, engaging in melee on a low-skill character with a fully loaded backpack is essentially a death sentence
night raiding is VERY powerful, even if it's a lot less easymode than it used to be. Night Vision trait + a shopping cart can let you strip entire neighborhoods dry in a single night with very little risk
Always remember that CDDA is turnbased and you shouldn't ever feel pressured. Just take your time, play it safe and check your keybinds if you can't remember how to do something

easy.
and unless its a really good spear you can just stash it with the pack or leave it at the bottom.
the ability to leave something and come back for it is more powerful than you think.
I usually use scrap swords anyways starting out so its not hard to have something that fits it, or to just make a new one.

Theres no mods to fix this, just stay away or wear proper gear like turnout clothes
>i dont want there to be 1 nail in the hardware store
Not a problem in DDA, its the opposite where 1 store and you have too much. Or don't play with the No Hope mod if you have it on, since it swings super hard in the nerf direction to the point it removes cool stuff like the carrier or military base.
>i dont want micromanage wearing gloves when i cast magic because not wearing gloves will make all my fingers get frostbite and fall off in 75 degree tepratures.
Magiclysm Misc expansion/revamp edition mod which lets you cast with gloves on. Its in Kenans modpack which is easy to find for BN. For DDA, Kenans is maintained by the Japanese and you have to dig through their wiki for it, the Chinese have a recent version that might still work thats easier to find.
