I'm glad the remake made Angela's popularity explode. In the original Riesz was the only character people cared about, but seeing her slutty designs in 3D made people appreciate Angela more. Plus the whole her being the absolute best late/post-game character in the game.

>unfucks magic in general (no more screen freeze, spells are real-time now)
>gives original concept art designs to second and third classes, not just a sprite recolors like in original (so Magus Angela is boner-inducing)
>gives Grand Divina one of the best passives for farming (basically infite amount of MP)
Her only issue is that both No Future and Expert Modes nerf damage magic way too hard, and while Riesz and Charlotte have support magic to still be viable Angela barely has any

The team behind Trials remake was busy with SaGa 2 remake (which also ended up being really good and faithful for a low-budget remake) while Oyamada picked up chinese dev team who was talented enough to make faithful 3D model of Riesz.
It's not the fault of devs or Oyamada himself when China saw the success of Black Myth and said "nah, why bother collabing with nips when we can just make our own games" and announced the dissolution of that dev team before Visions of Mana even came out (so it was their last project).

>SD1 (FF Adventure / Sword of Mana / Adventure of Mana) was pretty big back in the days for one of earliest ARPGs done by Squaresoft, on Game Boy of all platforms, but by today's standards it's very short and nothing special
>SD2 (Secret of Mana) is a clusterfuck of a development all because Sony cucked Nintendo by not delivering on CD-ROM add-on for SNES and making Playstation instead, so you get a messy game that was only popular in the West as baby's first JRPG
>SD3 (Trials of Mana) was made from cut content of SD2 and followed western RPGs like Ultima / D&D / Wizardry (which nips really love, see DQ and SaGa series) so it became a cult in Japan but never came out in the West until remake
>Legend of Mana was a thank-you project from Kawazu to Ishii for helping him with SaGa Frontier 1 and is basically a reskinned SaGa game with Mana characters, but because both LoM and Frontier 2 were developed at the same time they had some rough results (LoM has so many complex mechanics yet the combat itself is BRAINDEAD)
>SD4 (Dawn of Mana) was Ishii's bad idea of copying Half-Life 2 after being given a second chance to bring back Mana series to life (it was frozen until better times due to The Spirits Within killing / freezing 95% of Squaresoft's IPs) and the ending result SUCKS
Making a proper remake for SD3 as to market it for Western audience (while having the long-time support of nip audience by default) and NOT fucking things up with rewrites or censorship or other dumb bullshit (yeah, rip multiplayer and 2D sprites, but the trade-off was worth it) made wonders.

>SD was de-facto ARPG series for Squaresoft in the 90s and doing pretty damn well
>series goes into limbo because of TSW killing Squaresoft and them relying only on super big IPs (FF, DQ, KH) to sruvive after deal with Enix
>eventually things calm down and Ishii gets a chance to bring SD series back
>"hey, I saw that kickass Gravity Gun in Half-Life 2 where you can throw objects around to kill enemies and solve puzzles!"
>uhhh, maybe we should follow the modern example of Kingdom Hearts and do a proper ARPG of 00s, especially since other devs are making them as well these days?
>"nah, what engine was HL2 using to pull off that Gravity Gun? Havok Physics? Yeah, we're using it for SD4 as part of World of Mana project"
>b-but surely some of games in World of Mana will be safe ARPG and not just experimental stuff?
>"nope, I'm also making RTS and dungeon crawler Mana games! And your only "safe project" is bloated remake of SD1!"
And then World of Mana project bombed and Ishii was told to retire
Dawn of Mana sucks because it's not your open-world ARPG with usual RPG progression but some sort of 3D Classicvania (game is split into eight big linear levels) with VERY mazy level design (it's full of tunnels and high vertical rooms where it's easy to fall into the bottom of the room), where RPG stats don't exist (you get ATK, HP, MP and other minor stat increases by "stunning" enemies with objects thrown through your sword vine aka Gravity Gun, where your max level is Lv.4 and it resets at the start of each stage, where you need to manage elemental bullets propery because without them each boss is a tank that takes fuckall damage unless you weaken them with proper element and where optional content asks you to farm previous levels to farm medals to buy medals and use pets for time trials. And the story is as bland as SD1 (it also took Anise from LoM and turned her into Big Bad of entire SD series).
Dawn fucking sucks, and I had to 100% it out of respect for series.

I forgot to mention that RTS (Heroes) and dungeon crawler (Children) games were on DS
I wonder why RTS title on DS from a series that just came out of being dead didn't sell well...
And I still think that Dawn looked pretty nice, it's just the whole gameplay wasn't very fun (Legend had similar issue but at least everything else in LoM was top-notch, from graphics to story to music to usual Kawazu autism with gameplay mechanics like golemology and crafting) and it barely felt like RPG, let alone ARPG

It was fine for Squaresoft to experiment with the genre in the 90s (when the average budget for PS1 wasn't too high, so pic related was a norm to them), but by the time they turned into S-E and seventh gen was around the corner it was way too risky to pull off stuff like that (which is why many devs moved onto portables with lower budgets for titles). I mean, SD1 itself started as experimental RPG on handheld console, just with real-time action, and it just so happened to be a success... but maybe turning your fourth mainline title into an expensive experiment in a market full of successful ARPGs (especially when your own company had already found ARPG successor for SD series that is Kingdom Hearts) is a bad idea? Keeping experimental titles like Heroes and Children is fine, but don't turn Dawn into one.
And yeah, the similarities between SD2 and SD3 are easy to notice because both games were made from Maru Island leftovers (or rather whatever was cut from SD2 and didn't make it for Chrono Trigger was used in SD3).
>>717779237
I remember Children being even more tedious and repetitive than SD2 - the potential for something cool was there but the grind and quest system left a sour taste in my mouth. I did hear from lucky people that having a friend to play it together helps a ton, but alas I've also played it solo.

Your team composition actually does matter in Expert/No Future. Angela is pratically worthless in Expert because they overbuffed magic defense. NF really wants you to build around making your MC into the main super damage dealer because everyone else sucks under AI and you have a timelimit on fights.

Edelfrei has access to Offensive Stance which increases Atk by 40% while decreases Def by 40%. Def doesn't matter in No Future because you get OHKO'd by boss attacks and as an off character, Duran can't die because of Guiding Sword. The elemental sabers are a bonus. It's really good to have an Edelfrei. Plus, Kevin doesn't have access to Enigma, so he needs Duran to draw the enemy's attention.

I always loved that the Mana games kept the small references to classic Final Fantasy when it branched out into its own thing. I love seeing connected universes within themselves, not a crossover like MvC but a spinoff paying homage to its sibling series.

I think FF going full-on ARPG is going to bode poorly for Mana.

No joke, Edelfrei Duran with Guiding Sword is basically immortal offscreen. You slap on Offensive Stance and suddenly he’s dealing more burst than Berserker Kevin, while tanking absolutely nothing because he doesn’t need to. The devs probably just shrugged and said “yeah, that’s balanced.” Honestly makes No Future mode less of a slog when he’s holding down the fort like an anime dad with plot armor.

For me the only cannon games are 1,2&3.
They franchise went downhill starting with Legend of Mana. Too many weird designs (furries) that creep the franchise to this day.

I'm a believer that the man that as keeping things together was Hiromichi Tanaka, not Koichi Ishii. Yeah, Ishii created all the monsters and unique visuals, but Tanaka gave the games structure.

Kameoka Shinichi is also a cancer that ruined the series with his odd designs.

Maybe someone will produce a new game based on the lore of the earlier games.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana were basically the same game when Maru Island's development was still going (Maru = Round, check what's the round island in SD2).
Sakaguchi wanted to make REALLY big (in terms of content) JRPG to make something even greater than FF, and for that he aimed for few things during development:
>he absolutely had to use CD-ROM capabilities of huge storage space (to be able to fit all the content that was planned) and high reading speed (so that it actually felt like real-time ARPG)
>he asked Toriyama to be the artist (he was already working on Dragon Quest series for Enix, their rival company, and he was on peak of his popularity with Dragon Ball)
>he chose Seiken Densetsu as the game's basis because he kept saying that ARPGs are the future and good sales of SD1 just confirmed it
And their development was going smoothly (think FFXV done right, aka not Frankenstein tied together from separate ugly chunks of content but a proper big ass ARPG with multiple story routes and endings) until Sony cucked Nintendo. Squaresoft couldn't release Maru Island without CD-ROM so the project was sort-of abandoned - Sakaguchi started developing a different game with Toriyama with SNES cartridge storage in mind (while reusing some Maru Island's content and Toriyama's art), and that's how Chrono Trigger was made.
SD2 was still built upon Maru Island, but with a different artist (who just redraw Toriyama's characters in his own style, it's why Randy is literally Chrono and Purim is literally Marle) and cutting off TONS, FUCKING TONS of content just to fit the game on SNES cartridge. It's why you can fucking pinpoint the moments of the game where the locations are too fucking empty and rushed (and so is the plot), or how some dungeons are made from several parts of different dungeons if you look into file names for map data (see entirety of Sealed Continent). It's really sad because SD2 could've been great if not for lack of CD-ROM.

Visions had the issue of the demo dropping you midway through the game, and suddenly dumping a lot of mechanics at once on top of you, which was very confusing and offputting.
I think for JRPGs in general the best demos are the ones that let you play the beginning of the game and carry your save to the full one. That sold me on the Romancing Saga 2 remake, which was also by the Trials devs.

Visions specifically went with "A new chosen one has to be sacrificed every x years to keep the world safe, and they have to feel honered for it" approach, so I think it's particularly comparable. I enjoyed Visions of Mana a lot. Not perfect by any means, Trials remake had smoother combat and much more replayability, but still a very wholesome and comfy experience. In some ways it was actually kind of therapeutic for me, but that's due to personal reasons rather than any innate quality of the game itself. You can really tell that the devs struggled with what limited budget and time they had, I think they had the potential to make something truly great but were fucked over by the higherups. Need I remind you how even the people in here were dissing on Visions' characters for not being lewd enough despite being designed by Haccan, or whining about Val's design despite being heavily based on all the previous Mana MCs?

If you're saying it's bad because it's just a 1:1 copy of the original game with all its garbage mechanics rather than an actual remake I agree with that, but let's not pretend it did anything worse than the original outside of maybe a couple of BGMs, the main issue is that it is exactly like the original and the original was largely bad.

Creative ambitions often overstep tech limitations. The SNES was just not built to handle party AI and complicated RPG mechanics formulas in real time. At least with turn-based or ATB games, you can narrow combat down to one event at a time, even if the queue of actions to display and calculate is pseudo-real time in the latter. Meanwhile, ARPGs are this janky sandbox where the player can interact with enemies and the environment in unexpected ways and totally fuck everything up.

Trials hype isn't about angela and riesz, character designs get you fan art but no sales. Trials has stronger initial appeal because you can chose between 6 starting characters instead of just one; a potential buyer would have to reject all 6 to at least not be potentially interested (plus this forces the writers to actually treat each character as the hero of their own story as opposed to reverting to "MC and his bitches/simps", as they are all too tempted to do). It has extra stronger lasting appeal because by allowing the player to choose their party and having 3 relatively seperate storylines there's less repetitiveness in trying to replay the game, and teases the player with potential setups and combinations. So you see, from a game design perspective trials has an edge over a more conventional rpg like most mana games - you can certainly outdo it in the actual meat of the game, like gameplay, story, characters or worldbuilding, but visions in particular doesn't really stand out (or maybe feels worse) in these respects, so it just feels like a downgrade. The only clear improvement is in the graphics, which are beautifully executed, but clearly graphics alone don't sell a game.

I mostly don't agree with the complaints about character designs, i think the base designs all look pretty good however the upgraded classes are way too underwhelming and repetitive, some even look like outright recolors.

Visions of Mana was KINO and will become a HIDDEN GEM in the future that all of you retards will say was really good
Probably the last game with genuine SOUL made by SQ in the last decade.
It also has my wife Careena and my husband Julei in it

This is empty navel gazing that doesn't have any basis in reality, as much as it's a cool design detail nobody but a few hardcore SD fans really cares about the multiple character gimmick of SD3 just like nobody cares about the autistic intricacies of Legend, most people around don't replay the game and guess what? the vast majority of people who even finished the game to begin with did so with either Angela or Riesz rather than any of the other characters, go check the achievement rates and you'll see them tower over the rest of the cast with poor Kevin and Hawkeye being the least popular characters by a huge margin.
>but clearly graphics alone don't sell a game.
Nobody would have bought Trials if it looked like Adventures or SoM remake, just like nobody would have bought the RS2 remake if it didn't look the way it did.
Visions' problems are due to Trials not actually bringing in any real new blood to the series, most of the people who bought it fapped to Angela and Riesz and moved on because they had no actual interest in what Mana is about, with all its issues and troubled development Visions did nothing that wouldn't appeal to actual Mana fans, in fact it is really a huge love letter to the franchise as a whole, the uncomfortable truth is that Mana fans are a tiny minority and Trials' success was not at all representative of the actual userbase.

Same exact thing that happened with RS2R by the way, SF2R came out a couple of months after it and got ignored again, none of the other entries saw any significant increase in interest or discussion either because the vast majority who bought RS2R wasn't there to stay.
All long running JRPG series are suffering from this generational turn over and being unable to create new hardcore fans, Atelier also quickly destroyed itself trying to appeal to the Ryza crowd and some mystical "wider audience" unicorn rather than actual fans of the series.
