therefore, it only makes sense that arthur has the forward thinking sensibilities of aristocratic and scholarly types, in so far as much as an uneducated hick criminal like himself is capable, and often those sentiments bleed out through his nuanced approach to morality.

The game starts with "this outlaw stuff is coming to an end" literally written on the screen. Another quick example: if you listen to Bill at the party after reducing Sean, he talks about how the guys in the army talked a bunch about what they'd do after they were out, only to sign up to go back in. It's a form of institutionalization. Same with Dutch's gang, they rail against the government by being outlaws but Dutch and Micah try to keep the gang institutionalized into banditry. Almost as if there isn't much difference between the coming new age and the highwayman banditry of the past.

And the game gives you opportunity to break free from that, or at least presents Arthur as someone who is thinking that.

that's the biggest issue with the game, is that the two modes of play are way too different from each other. no mission actually makes use of the open world in any meaningful way, even minor deviations from what the game wants you to do results in a game over and reset back to checkpoint. all the open world does for missions is add downtime and walking and talking bits to every mission because you always need to ride to your destination as basically no mission starts at where the mission actually begins. as for hunting and fishing they're fun enough but only really reward you in minor ways, as money (in a story about how you all need money really badly) is infinite. the inventory upgrades are the only thing worth a shit

I dunno the illusion breaks pretty quick once you start hearing the same shit, or seeing the same random events in the wilderness. the first time I saved the dude from a snakebite and he bought be a gun was cool because it was early and money was tight, the 4th time it happened it didn't matter because the guns were progression locked and I had more than enough money to buy every gun in the game. even doing crime in the open world feels bizarrely wrong, the disguise stuff just...doesn't work like at all. and crime doesn't pay enough to justify the bounties you get for doing them, and bounties are basically unavoidable. the crime not paying enough to pay off bounties is fine, it's thematically inline with the setting so I don't mind it too much, but being unable to avoid them at all, or having coppers spawn in the middle of the wilderness during my train robbery just feels bad and reveals the artifice for what it is.
