Just a pattern I've observed. Game devs try to maximise engagement by means of algorithms (e.g. SBMM) despite the obvious, gaming community desire for custom lobbies. When the game starts dying and losing players, and the engagement can no longer be regulated with as much agency as before, custom lobbies are implemented to salvage and squeeze what little residual value is left. Then the game finally dies, as even the most die-hard fans move on to something else, and the friendship groups get their fill of the experience.
