Antonov died recently. Some of the old members came back for A project at Valve, presumably HL3. It better be worth the weight.

The end of Half-Life Alyx is completely meaningless because you could have just as easily written
>2007: Half-Life 2 Episode Two released and the ending is a teaser for Half-Life 2 Episode Three
And Half-Life 2 Episode Three was an actual officially announced game too while there has NEVER been an official announcement of a Half-Life 3. Yet everyone expects Half-Life 3 and not Half-Life 2 Episode Three for some reason.

They're gonna pull some "closed time loop" nonsense where every event was always orchestrated by G-Man in some 5D chess timeline. Freeman's just gonna be a fancy meat puppet with a crowbar. Either that or they soft reboot it by having someone else get the HEV suit in a post-collapse world. Honestly though, knowing Valve, they’ll spend five years perfecting headcrab eyelash physics and drop the plot entirely.

To quote Marc Laidlaw himself, "story was never the boss of anything."

Laidlaw's job was never to write a story that the level designers would tell, Laidlaw's job was to take all the cool ideas that the level designers have and figure out a way to combine them together into a story. The entire plot of Half-Life (basically the level track) had already determined even before Laidlaw was hired. Even with Half-Life 2 where Laidlaw was there from the beginning, he only wrote as much as made sense to inspire the level designers, then tried to figure out how to stitch it all together at the end.

Good thing is that even Valve realized going back in time to Black Mesa is a stupid plot, so I don't think we'll see that kind of nonsense.

Marc Laidlaw claims that way back in 1998-1999 he encouraged Gearbox to blow up Black Mesa in Opposing Force to remove the temptation of ever going back to Black Mesa.

I feel that HL3 will focus more on the story because this time they are forced to address the two cliffhangers they have gotten themselves into. HL2 was freer in that regard because as far as Valve was concerned, HL1 ended rather conclusively with a lot of possibilities they could have chosen.

I love alyx, it's one of the most unique gaming experiences i've ever had, but no it doesn't validate the purchase of a headset and it's STILL the only real VR game, therefore it's doomed to live on in obscurity.
That said if HL3 comes out next year with the release of the index 2 i'm probably still buying it.

Which is why they should have just made HL2Ep3 in the first place. After his retirement, Laidlaw gave an interview where he stated that his personal goal had been for HL2Ep3 to have wrapped up the HL2 story arc to leave a clean state for HL3 the same way HL1 had left a clean slate for HL2, with the implication that the failure to make HL2Ep3 was a great personal regret of his.

Yeah, there's a good chance that Casali is back as a level design contractor.

Really wish Valve would try to get the whole "band" back by also bringing back Casali's old cabal mates Steve Bond and John Guthrie, assuming they haven't been black-listed from Valve like Tom Leonard was.

Dario Casali, John Guthrie, Steve Bond, and Tom Leonard were the Ravenholm/City 17/Canals cabal during the development of Half-Life 2.
After Half-Life 2 and the Episodes, Leonard ended up doing a lot of work with Mike Booth on the L4D and L4D2 AI Director and then on Source 2 engine development, but ultimately Leonard was caught on the losing end of the Valve internal politics infighting over company direction in the 2013 era when Michael Abrahs was pushing to turn Valve into a VR company. He wasn't the only one, either. For other big names at Valve that were caught in the 2013 purge, see:
https://www.pcgamer.com/valve-layoff-hardware-mobile/
Tom Leonard still appeared in the Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Documentary so I'm guessing personal feelings have gotten over it in the intervening years, but Valve supposedly has a policy of never re-hiring anybody who was fired, so he's never coming back unfortunately.

Michael Abrash fucked Valve hard back then I hear. Supposedly the guy was Facebook's "spy" when the company turned its attention to VR and took a lot of Valve's tech and brought some of its employees to Oculus. It's also theorized that John Carmack had something to do with it as well.
