About why Pauline (the same one from Odyssey) is 14 in this game, not about that

They did not confirm that Donkey Kong Bananza is a prequel to Super Mario Odyssey.

They soft-confirmed it by having an established character (as confirmed by nintendo) show up as a child without any age regression elements present

>Yoshi's Island Games (everyone is a baby)
>Donkey Kong (Lady is most likely her own character and the grandma of Pauline that she frenquently mentions in Bananza, while Cranky is the Original Donkey Kong, meaning most likely that Jump Man is his own character too
> DK Jr. and Donkey Kong 3
>Donkey Kong Games (Donkey Kong Country series and Donkey Kong Country Returns + DKC Tropical Freeze)
>Donkey Kong Bananza (Teenage Pauline)
>Literally every single other mario game prior to odyssey
>Super Mario Odyssey
>Literally every single mario game that came out after odyssey

There can be generations of Pauline, just like how there are generations of Donkey Kong.

>meaning most likely that Jump Man is his own character too
Wasn't that pretty much confirmed by the movie?
Anonymous No.717782347 >>717782564

until proven otherwise, the simplest and most likely explanation is that both paulines are the same character
after all, if two of the most famous people on the planet were her parents, you'd expect her to bring them up at some point and not just her grandma, and she probably wouldn't be wearing a torn dress while performing on the street before making it big

My explanation, that Bananza Pauline is Mayor Pauline's daughter, is the simplest, because then, nothing gets retconned.

They never deconfirmed it either
Anonymous No.717782853
>>717782626
They didn't deconfirm it because that would confirm that it is a sequel.
They want the players to figure that out for themselves.
Anonymous No.717782857 >>717783104
>>717782564
except nintendo has already retconned tons of stuff before because they don't care that much about the DK "timeline"
it's simply much more likely that they're going with the "void kidnapped pauline, not DK" angle moving forward so DK can have a consistent "hero" characterisation from here on out

The developers of Donkey Kong Bananza who worked on Odyssey would not contradict a game that they helped develop.
Donkey Kong Bananza recycles the assets from New Donk City, which the developers edited to look more modern.
It is a sequel.

>Donkey Kong Bananza recycles the assets from New Donk City, which the developers edited to look more modern
Because the previous game's NDC used a big band aesthetic that wouldn't be appropriate for the big city look bananza aimed for, but nevertheless, was the former was set in the current day

Donkey Kong Bananza is set 13 years after that because there are now streaming services, specifically ones with a "+" in their name.

That's some flimsy evidence at best
Feels like grasping at straws, specially considering that Nintendo already pointed out both characters are one and the same: nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/ask-the-developer-vol-19-donkey-kong-bananza-part-3/

They say that every Link is the same Link even though they said they are all different Links.
It's called marketing.
Anonymous No.717784172 >>717784430

That makes no sense from a marketing standpoint, if they wanted her to be a new character they wouldn't have called her Pauline, they would have called her something else because then they'd have a brand new character they could use for publicity
If you actually read the interview you will see that the bananza character is called Pauline because they wanted to have Odyssey's Pauline in the game

Her not being Odyssey Pauline is something they need to announce.

That's because they want Mario to be as much of a blank slate as possible, no romance allowed

Mario's 40th Anniversary is almost here.
Do you think that maybe, Nintendo might be doing something new with Mario?

It's just a suggestion for Nintendo.
It's not one of my theories.
Anonymous No.717787997
>>717783279
And yet if Bananza really is set in the "current day" of the Mario universe, funny how not a single returning NPC from Odyssey pops up-not even a nod to the fact that Pauline was mayor. You'd think the city council or one of the taxi drivers might mention the world's most famous jazz singer pulling a Batman and switching careers. Unless, you know, it's just a soft reboot and they didn't want to commit to canon. Nintendo's real strategy is SchrΓΆdinger’s continuity-only exists if Miyamoto remembers it that morning.

Exactly, and that’s where the tonal shift kicks in. It’s that classic Nintendo move-make just enough changes to imply growth, like updated cityscape textures and tech references, but stop short of outright saying β€œthis is 13 years later.” It’s plausible deniability at work. They want to reap the nostalgia without drawing a line in the canon sand. Same trick they pulled when they brought Bowser Jr. in without explaining what happened to the Koopalings. They leave the door open so fans can spin whichever theory makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside.
