It's less that a game directly changes your life and more that it directs your brain towards certain things and issues, or makes you remember certain ways you felt during it or "back then" if you've played it long ago. Sometimes you remember the mood of certain tracks some lines just live rent free in your head, etc.

Like I obviously knew that no one lives forever before P3 FES but it did kind of direct my thoughts towards thinking about the ephemerality of things in general. It also has such a positive, optimistic, life-affirming message in general, you can't not remember it fondly.

Here's a concrete example. Black Souls 2, with its heavy focus on literature, made me remember just how much I enjoyed reading books as a child and a teenager (I lapsed in university due to constant fatigue and having practically no free time). The game made me want to read the books that inspired it, and it eventually snowballed into branching off to read other books. My current read has nothing to do with the game, I read purely for pleasure now.

Too many. For example MGS2 back in the day made me realize the storytelling depth games could have. The "4rth wall break" at the end and the overall themes made me appreciate the unique "meta storytelling" games can have. Plus I always try to dig deeper on the hidden agendas of people and organizations.

Another recent example is nicer automata. For the artistic philosophy of taro. The out of the box thinking for the game elements and the masterful way to blend mechanics/story/npcs/themes. One of the closest "the medium is the message" made videogame I have seen.

I wouldn't say "changed my life" but the Cassandra ending to Mafia 3 is pretty fucking grim.
The government gives up on the city and cuts off all funding to school, police, road maintenance, electricity, garbage disposal, everything. A hurricane comes by and they also offer no help, leaving the entire city to die.
It was quite the left turn from "I just got my revenge and I'm driving out of town in my cool car while listening to some quality music".

The Recognitions. Love the prose and the subject matter. Surprisingly straightforward too, it feels more Melville/Mann than Joyce/Pynchon. I really needed a break after the wild roller coasters that were Ulysses and V. They felt just a tad too fragmented.
>what exactly about Black Souls II is so good?
It's a very interesting game structurally, in that it attempts to port the modernists' tools of the trade to the video game medium. Nonlinearity, intertextuality, cyphers. It even experiments with stream of consciousness in a few places, though mostly ineptly (or poorly translated). And it even manages to tell an emotional story underneath all that experimentation.

Was back in 2007. I think it was a mix of resident evil 4 (wii), wind waker, halo 3, Mario Galaxy and crysis. It was probably the huge explosion in the potential of videogames as a medium. New mechanics that blow your mind, instant classics came out every month and technologically improvements were ultra fast and clearly visible.

I'm a tech artist but I've been working for more than a decade and I have done animation, programming, game design, concept art,... I really love every aspect and learning everything from every department. Really sad with the direction the industry took, luckily I work with japanese devs now and they take games more as an art and less as a product. I like the anonymity of this forum sorry

two come to mind:

Undertale is one, the game is not in my top 10, its probably in my top 20 tough

however, its one of the best vidya stories ive seen, told in the most inventive way ive seen a vidya story being told, i was frankly astonished, different playthroughs made me feel sad, excited, frustrated and dejected, the difference between true pacifist and genocide route is so vast, the game is almost unrecognizable

MGS3: Subsistence is the other, ive finished that game so many times before, but almost 2 years ago, Konami re-released it, i replayed that game, for the first time in ages, heck it mightve been a decade since i had last replayed the game, and while part of the story doesnt hold up, pretty much everything else does, i also learned to appreciate the excellent cinematography of the cutscenes even more, and once you fully submerge in Kojima's wacky world, you stupid making questions such as "why can Volgin control electricity?" because the answer is, it doesnt matter, it doesnt need an answer and doesnt change anything about the plot

this game is my favorite game ever, my top 1, the closest games have gotten to perfection in my opinion and neither time nor Konami's shitty PC port could change my mind

Replaying star fox assault
A gamecube was my first gaming system I ever owned, and star fox assault was the game that came with it. I remember it as my 9th birthday present, my last good birthday, and the absolute joy I felt.
In that time, when I'd get off the schoolbus, my mother would be on lunch break, and would usually pick me up at the apartment to take me to work with her(kmart). I'd mostly just window-shop the toy aisle and play the game demos, but the demo I played the most was the starfox assault demo. Level 1 and 2, over and over. I fucking loved that game so much as a kid.

Fast forward several years, and I'm sitting and playing through it on an emulator, and once I finish it and the credits roll, I realized how much time has passed, how much things have changed, and how the world seems a lot more colorless now than it seemed then. I just sat there looking at the screen almost in a trance, then turned off the computer and laid in bed for a while. I wasn't reliving the past so much as reconsidering it, and realized how much cynicism and pessimism did more harm than good in my life: how I'd been on survival mode for so long in the years between that 9th birthday year and now, but it was all over now and it was time to let go. Time to stop surviving and time to start living.

Reminder that most F2P games encourage fucktons of grinding whereas most medium-price games can be completed in around 60 hours tops. Statistics like this are going to be skewed in favor of F2P just by virtue of the base design keeping you in-game for more hours.
What does have a lesson to teach here is that more people will pay for a reasonably priced game. Devs should be targeting that middle range.

Seeing the satellite drifting through space and realizing all of humanity was going to be a simulation in a digital cage until the computer eventually wore out and died gave me a degree of existential horror nothing I've watched, read, or played before or since has ever topped. I didn't enjoy the Citadel DLC though, it felt very out of character. I don't mind it was meant to be more lighthearted but I felt it leaned into it too hard, very obvious they were trying to make up for the shit endings.
I think if they didn't overhype the ending and just focused on giving one solid ending with a bunch of sub endings for all the smaller choices you made, it would have been fine.

Grimm brothers are the most dominant. Lewis just comes through the most due to Nyarlathotep's mindfuckery.
Also, the roleplay shit predates BS1 and the soul amalgamation, Nyarlathotep (later Prickett) interacted with Lewis' soul directly before it was stolen by Nug/Yeb for the Grimm project. Although who knows what happened in the 62 cycles between BS1 and BS2, maybe Nyarly got even more unhinged.

I believe every story is a lesson, everything we consume affects us in one way or the other, its impossible to not be affected, but its our choice what we consume and are affected by. Even a great story without a central theme or full of something you already know is worthwhile in this regard. Most notable to me were:
>kotor 1/2
>deus ex
>pikmin
>pandoras tower
>morrowind
>vtmb
>arx fatalis
These all were excellent and deep adventures I feel like I truly did live through them. For life changing stuff its Yakuza series. 5 and 7 blew me away and made me think about them for months after. 7 Especially changed my life. One of my most crippling issues beside being mentally ill, is my ever consuming, ever present fear and regret. I've been at the game of fixing my shitty life ever since I was a kid, and when true wizardhood came, after so many years of despair and shit not working out, I was at the end of my wits. The story of Ichiban and his personality had a huge impact on my world-view and that its really never owari da until I say its so. I am happy to say that my life improved in every aspect after finishing 7. Got a new high paying job, fixed my teeth, got a bunch of surgeries to fix my broken body. There's still a long way to go but for the first time in 20-30 years I feel like I could be happy in life.

Some will certainly find it cringe, but I have to confess that I learned Ichiban Ka word for word and I sing it every time I feel down because "γΆγ£γ‘γ‚ƒγ‘γ‚―γ‚½γƒ€γ‚΅γ„δ½•γ‚‚ζŒγŸγͺい勇者でもいいんだ".

funnily enough every single ending that is not related to vito is a bad ending. the best ending is vito taking care of the casino and clay fucking off even though he finds no peace.

I beat 1,2,3,4 back to back to back to back when I was like 13. I watched every cutscene in every game and loved every second of it. I fear I'll never be that based again
